Synopsis

There have been many British period pieces on television, but Poldark may be the most beloved of all. This costume drama, set in the 18th Century, was based on the Poldark novels by Winston Graham and illustrated the life and loves of Captain Ross Poldark, an aristocrat returning back to his home in Cornwall after fighting in America's War for Independence. The largely socio-economic message of Poldark speaks about unjust contrasts between the poor and the wealthy, and Poldark is often seen at odds with members of his own class. This outstanding series was lauded for having remarkable outdoor sequences and superior acting. Above all, Poldark is a lively, engaging historical drama.

DVD Description

Set in Nampara, Cornwall in the 1780s where Ross Poldark (Robin Ellis) is in danger of losing his liberty after a serious charge of looting a shipwreck in Nampara Cove. His liberty is not the only thing at risk when the Warleggans decide to foreclose on his mine and estate. If he`s to survive, he must find the unminded lode of copper at Wheel Grace, and to do this he must find Mark Daniel, the only man to have seen it, who`s now living in exile.

For someone who had the 'hots' for Angharad Ress when he was a nipper, maybe I'm a little biased giving a review of Poldark. But I would say that's it's a hugely enjoyable and well acted period drama series that stands up to the test of time, as do most old period pieces. Well worth a watch on a cold Sunday night when all you can find on TV is ghastly reality programmes. Highly recommended.

Although this series is 35 years old, it is still a terrific series, made a lovely change from all the murder and violence made for today's market. (Series 1 had been a xmas present)
