Stunning collection...., 6 Sep 2005
This review is from: Polaroids: A Video Collection [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
The release of a D.V.D. of any artist collection of "hits" or best-loved tracks is where the D.V.D. usually follows the same running order as the C.D. of the same name, not so with Shawn Colvin's "Polaroids: a video collection" not only do you get the promotional films for the tracks released as singles from her excellent back catalogue with the choice of Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound or P.C.M. stereo, the disc also contains nine live performances, there is also 2 interviews, a discography and a very revealing audio commentary track for all the promos from Shawn herself, all accessed using interactive menus.
For me 2 of the standout tracks are the songs called "I don't Know Why" and the duet with Mary Chapin Carpenter entitled "One Cool Remove" the first for the heartfelt lyrics and the second for the superb vocals of Colvin and Carpenter together which meld together to give an angelic effect that gives the song real depth.
Four of the live tracks were recorded at West 54th with Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell's ex-husband) playing bass and Stewart Smith playing electric guitar.
These four songs have a very intimate interview with Chris Douridas sitting at a bar drinking placed right in the middle of them.
The stripped back versions of "Kill The Messenger", "The Facts about Jimmy", "Sunny Came Down" and Diamond in the Rough" that Klein and Smith perform with Shawn are something special, with just the sound of their guitars the songs take on a whole new identity that only a live rendering could deliver worth the price of this DVD alone.
The other live songs are from a show performed at Austin City Limits on the 15th of March 2001 this time Shawn is playing with her full live band.
The tracks are "Anywhere you go", "Bonefields", "Shotgun Down The Avalanche" (which has a guest appearance from the superb Alison Krauss singing backing vocals and playing violin which adds a wonderful feeling of melancholy to an already emotional song) and "Bound on you".
The last live song of the collection is a TV. Performance from "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno introducing Shawn and Co this appearance is from the 14th of December 1998 to promote her Christmas C.D. "Holiday songs and Lullabies" released in the U.S. only and came out earlier that year, this appearance has Shawn and her band all dressed in pyjamas.
To finish this visual history of Ms Colvin is the original version of "I Don't Know Why" which was rejected by Shawn's record company "Columbia".
On a personal level "I Don't Know Why" is one of my favourite songs by this artist as the simple arrangement and vocal performance moves me every time I hear it.
Most of the material on this DVD collection has never been shown on terrestrial television in the UK, this is the first time I have seen any of this material myself and having admired Ms Colvin's songs since I saw her live as a support act many years ago, it was with a great sense of anticipation as I broke the seal of the box for this D.V.D. and placed it in the tray of the player, I wasn't disappointed, favourite tracks brought to life with stunning images, and superb live performances to enjoy.
The package is approximately two hours in length and gives a comprehensive taste of Shawn's music, real value for money indeed.
This is a welcome addition to an under appreciated singer songwriter's available material so do yourself a favour and seek out this region 1 DVD.

Shawn Colvin videos don't often get aired on TV so this is a great opportunity for fans to check them out. The singer's commentary is amusingly wry throughout and her songs remain timeless and classy, even if some of her hairstyles don't!
