3.0 out of 5 stars Adequate but not designed for improving fitness 14 Jan 2013
Colour Name:Black (M)|Verified Purchase
This gets two stars because it's a perfectly adequate basic heart rate monitor and watch, plus another star for Amazon dealing with the return and refund so quickly.

However it is pretty flawed as a piece of fitness equipment. The biggest problem is that you cannot set a custom lower limit for a training band. You can only set a maximum. The minimum is always set at what it determines your 'fat burning' threshold to be (i.e. 65% of maximum heart rate).

This is a problem if, like me, you are training for an endurance sport using a number of different heart rate training zones. For example I often want to do long-ish intervals at 80-85% of my heart rate reserve (so for me that's 172-179 bpm). On the cheaper, more basic FT4, I can set this custom band, together with an audible alarm and visual indicator if I go out of it. For some reason, on the FT40 doesn't have this feature - I'd have to settle for a training band of 65-85% of my maximum heart rate (so that's starting down at 130 - quite a difference).

So it's a pretty blunt tool if you're serious about improving your fitness. Also, as well as only having one training threshold, it also seems to be determined as a percentage of maximum heart rate, whereas most athletes will work from percentage of heart rate reserve (i.e. the different between resting and maximum). For me, it suggested anything over 130 would improve my fitness, whereas the lowest intensity I actually work at is 148 plus. Now in fairness Polar don't know how fit you are when you start using the watch, and for people just starting an exercise plan using the maximum heart rate percentage is probably safer, but it's frustrating that you can't then progress, especially when cheaper models have this feature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fitness Test Function 15 Sep 2010
Colour Name:Black (M)
Got one of these for customer stock and to test out. Realy impressed with all the functions, far more indepth and accurate than other brands. The main reature is the Fitness Test. This is a 5 min test first thing in the morning while your in bed. Just put your chest strap on and start the fitness test. The FT40 then calculates your heart rate in this time with your personal setting to give you a fitness score. The more you train the better the score gets. You can see a graph in the trends function. Very good product worth the extra 35 from a FT7.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Training Mate 28 Mar 2011
By Jan
Colour Name:Black (F)
This is a smart looking watch, I love the shadowed flowers as this feminises the item a little. I am able to monitor each training session, can look at my weekly data and compare, always know what my heart rate is doing and how hard I am trying. It's also a bonus having a coded item as you don't pick up signals from other people or machines. Although not one of the cheapest HRM's on the market, I'd rather spend a little extra and have this one - it's by far the best I've had over the years. For anyone who is serious about their training sessions and monitoring their efforts, I'd recommend.

Now, this is supposed to be a cross training/ fitness watch, meaning that I want to be able to monitor my calories burnt and my heart rate throughout the WHOLE exercise.
BUT as soon as you straighten up you arms (aerobics...push ups....) the wrist watch loses the signal.

For 80 this is not acceptable. I returned it after two tries. I did make sure the strap was correctly attached and moistened. I even tried changing the batteries on both the watch and the transmitter...no luck

On Polar website it says that the transmission range is 1m. Nowhere near that to be honest....
Don't bother unless you are only using for running.

My POlar F4 works better than this, don't even want to try another Polar HRM now.

I am not into high tech so was surprised as to how fast I was able to use this watch. I have enjoyed having the statistics available to me as to my month's workouts (which my physio has used to monitor my progress after having back surgery).

5.0 out of 5 stars Very pleased 16 Oct 2012
By Mr C
Colour Name:Black (M)
I've been using this for almost 3 months now and am delighted with the results so far. I use it primarily for working out in the gym which has Polar equipped machines and it always connects fine displaying the same heart rate as the watch.

Make sure you wet the 2 grey patches of the chest belt sufficiently, I now always run under the tap until well soaked. On a couple of ocassions my watch kept losing the heart rate signal but I think that was down to the grey patches not being wet enough as it worked fine as soon as I ran under the tap again.

It does everything I want it to do; sync with equipment, display heart rate, fat burn/fitness zones, calories burnt, workout duration, time/date, backlight, inc results displaying time spent in each zone. Strap is secure, buttons simple to operate and its easy to navigate.

Can't fault it so far so would happily recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dorian 5 Sep 2012
By Dorian
Colour Name:Black (M)|Verified Purchase
arrived in a couple of days, very well packaged
im really pleased with the watch and strap!! made a lot of difference than relying on the machines in the gym to tell you my heart rate and how many calories i burnt ( bike said i had burnt 400ish calories in a certain time and my watch said it was more like 600ish!!) plus it automaticly syncs with most machines so they give you a far better read out!
i found that i had to wet the strap every time i used it where some people say they only had to wet it once but to be honest with you it only takes two seconds to run under a tap then put it on so its not a problem!
VERY pleased with this product it gives you more incentive to push yourself to burn more calories
