Book Description

19 Mar 2009

Adam Zamoyski first wrote his history of Poland two years before the collapse of the Soviet Union. This substantially revised and updated edition sets the Soviet era in the context of the rise, fall and remarkable rebirth of an indomitable nation.

In 1797, Russia, Prussia and Austria divided Poland among themselves, rewriting Polish history to show that they had brought much-needed civilisation to a primitive backwater. But the country they wiped off the map had been one of Europe’s largest and most richly varied, born of diverse cultural traditions and one of the boldest constitutional experiments ever attempted. Its destruction ultimately led to two world wars and the Cold War.

Zamoyski’s fully revised history of Poland looks back over a thousand years of turmoil and triumph, chronicling how Poland has been restored at last to its rightful place in Europe.

Review

‘Invaluable and eye-opening.’ Boyd Tonkin, Independent

‘An excellent book.’ Financial Times

‘Fresh, different and brilliantly readable…It is the perfect introduction for those who know nothing about the country, yet will also provide some positive food for thought to those who imagined they knew it all too well.’ Spectator

‘A dramatic history of Poland that captures the spirit of its people…Such an extraordinary national trajectory demands an accessible and scholarly accounting. Zamoyski succeeds admirably in providing both.’ Daily Telegraph

‘For the past 25 years, thanks to the efforts of Adam Zamoyski, we have been better informed about the history and character of Poland than about any other East European country…Zamoyski’s new perspective on an old culture and its modern political liberty is…presented with a new, confident sense of freedom.’ The Times

‘Eminently readable.’ TLS

‘Shrewd…an excellent section on the country and its politics since ’89.’ Independent on Sunday

5.0 out of 5 stars Zamoyski scores again 29 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
This is money well spent. Zamoyski at his best. Polish history is complicated, especially for the Anglo reader. One cannot do better than choose ANY of Zamoyski's books to get at the heart of the subject. His writing style , clear, concise, and always with a bit of humor, takes the reader on an enlightening and entertaining journey through history. What's more, each tome is a great reference. As a free lance writer, I usually return to Zamoyski for brief quotes that add clarity and color to my articles He's the best in his fields of expertise.

5.0 out of 5 stars reads like a crime novel 16 Aug 2010

Format:Hardcover
Zamoyski is now among my favourite history writers together with Tom Holland and Antony Beevor. He found out lots of interesting stories and details, he told them from new for me perspective and the whole story reads like a crime novel - I normally take a rest between different chapters of history books, but books by those three giants i read in one breath.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy going but worth it 17 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have recently discovered the works of Adam Zamoyski through his work on 1812 and Napolean's retreat from Russia. Given that I had enjoyed that book so much I decided to seek out more of his work, and I'm pleased to say that I was not disappointed with the overall result.

Zamoyski's work on the history of Poland is filled to the brim with very interesting facts and I have learnt an incredible amount through reading this work. It is intelligently constructed and appears to be very well researched. The book basically does what it says on the tin, it covers Polish history from the founding of the state and the first Piast kings through to the collapse of the Soviet Union and finishes around 2005. The book gives a brief, but well informed overview, but will give you no more than a taster for your particular event or person. However, if like me, you are relatively new to the history of Poland, this book is an excellent place to start.

My only criticism (which could be more down to me than the author) is that I found the start of the book rather heavy going, to be honest, at times reading the book seemed to be the mental equivalent of swimming in treacle. However, this condition did not affect the whole book or reading experience. So while I would recommend this book, I would advise fellow readers that it is, or can be, quite heavy going in parts. However, I would absolutely urge you to keep reading as the overall result is truly worth it.
