This is an unusual book in that it's written by a comparative novice to poker, whose credibility is based on her expertise in the study of body language in general. The result of this is that on the few occasions when she talks explicitly about how to play poker, her comments can make anyone with a half-decent knowledge of the game cringe, but fortunately she mostly sticks to her strength, which is body-language, player-typing and psychology. As for body-language, Mike Caro's Book of Tells and Joe Navarro's Reap 'em and Reap cover the subject much more thoroughly but if you don't have those books, it's a decent introduction. The real value of this book is the author's insights into player-typing and psychology, both of the reader and of their opponents. If you're already pretty genned up on psychology, you'll probably know most if not all of this book, but for most players, it's a very valuable resource.

The writer doesn't know poker 22 Oct 2007
By M. Grabanski - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I began reading this book at my local bookstore and found the first chapter interesting enough to buy it through amazon. After the first chapter it became painfully obvious that the writer of the book rarely played poker. She does seem to understand human behavior, but I didn't feel she connected this knowledge to the poker table. The last straw of this book came when she suggested to the reader to watch reality TV in order to hone your active listening skills. I would not recommend you purchasing this book.

Complete waste of time 12 May 2010
By Christine Waste - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I agree with the 1st 2 reviewers, this book is the worst book on the subject of poker I have ever read. I continued reading it long after I otherwise would have simply because I foolishly thought that surely, there would have to be some relevent connection to poker somewhere in this scrapheap of paper shoved together and loosly called a book. First off, I don't have to spend a year watching the authors body language (as she seems to think it takes that long to make basic connections about body language) to know that the author has never played poker, ever. I am convinced that she watched a few episodes of high stakes poker and said "wow, I could put out a book on bluffing and make some money." She says time and time again that bluffing is what poker is all about. Anyone that's spent 5 minutes reading about poker knows that this is a huge misconception that only people that have never played believe...such as this author. This book reads like a 1st year psychology book, instead of saying "typically if 3 spades hit the flop and your opponent checks their hole cards, it usually means they have one spade" she enjoys running you around in circles constantly telling you to ask "why are they doing this?" and "what does it really mean?" Then proceeds to tell you that you should study them profusely and then write a discertation before coming to a decision about what they're body language means; I'm exaggerating but you get my point. She goes on random rants about topics that have even less to do with poker than the rest of the book in an attempt to drag the book out to a publishable number of pages. Expect to read a lot about displacement activities and social encoding and very little about useful, relevant information that you can bring to the table. If you did what this book told you to, instead of bringing money to the table you'd bring a philosophers notebook and a freshman psych class to study poker players in their natural habitat. I didn't read it to the end, but I wouldn't be surprised if the last 50 pages simply say, "haha, you bought my book, haha" over and over again. In case my point isn't clear yet, this book is a complete waste of time and money.

Great Body Language Primer 29 Jan 2008
By Butterscotch - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This was a really great body language book, hidden under a really bad cover and an equally bad title. The book is 100% useful in everyday situations but, unfortunately, the title might only appeal to people specifically interested in poker. I was pleasantly surprised that the entire book was about body language, with very little poker information. If knowing more about poker is important to you .. skip this book. I had expected things like card layouts and specific poker ramblings, but that was absent. The information is very general in nature and, although the author shows how it can be applied in poker and bluffing situations, the book is much more than just poker body language. I'd highly recommend this book for body language enthusiasts. My favorite chapter was actually the one about Stress - the author had new and innovate ideas for combating stress and I found that wonderfully helpful.
