In the beginning, God created man. And He saw that it was good. Then Man created Pokemon. And it too, was good.
This is the first, and in my opinion, definitive, movie that features the Japanese creations, Pokemon. A craze that took the whole world by storm back in the late 90's, and is still going strong today. You only have to look at the number of Pokemon movies that exist now to see that. But there can only be one number one. And this is it. Without a doubt. I can honestly say that even now, eight years on, this movie still looks as good as new. The chemistry between Ash and Pikachu is as high as it ever was, and the characters all work well together, the old guard of Ash, Misty and Brock providing the majority of the lines.
The storyline too is highly thought-out, featuring a battle between an ancient and powerful pokemon, Mew, and a clone made from his DNA but engineered to be all-powerful, Mewtwo. Every directorial decision made concerning this movie was a good one, and the storyline is weighty and at times, touching, without ever being earnest, something which even Hollywood blockbusters struggle to do. The climax of this movie will make some people cry, no doubt, especially girls and squares, but that just goes to show how strong the writing is.
If you are just getting into Pokemon, or you are only familiar with 3rd generation Pokemon or higher, this movie should definitely be on your wish list, as it is the definitive example of how to make a great Pokemon movie. If I could score it higher than 5, believe me I would.
