Amazon.co.uk Review

Pokémon 2000, the second film to spin off the powerhouse child-friendly franchise of the turn-of-the-millennium, consists of the colourful if babyish human-presence free, short Pikachu's Rescue Adventure and the more elaborate feature The Power of One. The main attraction is up to snuff animation-wise, with imaginative settings (an island lair, a huge dirigible) that crossbreed cyberpunk futurism and Jules Verne style retro-fantasy. It even has the germ of an interesting, almost subversive idea, in that the story's wealthy villain is a green-haired fanatic who is as obsessive about collecting Pokémon as the film's target audience--he's after three fabled birds, Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno, but is really interested in the cute Loch Ness Monster-type being Lugia--but his philosophy is so skewed that he is more interested in owning and numbering the fabulous creatures than training or befriending them. A clever pun in a prophecy decrees that in a predestined crisis, "the world will turn to ash"--this turns out not to be a gloomy foretelling of holocaust but the revelation that human hero Ash is a messianic "Chosen One" who can restore the balance of nature when the collector's antics have unleashed worldwide climatic change.

Adults might find the whole thing an endurance test for its shrill voicings, with Americanised kids and Japanese baby-talking Pokémon, not to mention the meld of incredibly simplistic storyline with amazingly intricate backstory. A trace of self-awareness comes in a brief snippet from a Weird Al Yankovic's song ("Polka mon") under the crowded end credits. --Kim Newman

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Pokemon movie so far, 1 Dec 2002
Many supposedly 'true' anime fans may consider Pokemon not to be anime as it has become hugely popular, but I, a big anime fan (I love everything from Pokemon to 'Ghost in the Shell') absolutely love the show and the movies, and I'm 19!!! It is cute, clever, and great for all ages to watch, but most people forget how serious, dark and adult the plots can get, espcially when it comes to the movies.

This one is a collosal one. I think the actual storyline is based upon a story by Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of the games. It has something for everyone; action,
suspense, humour, a stong moral about how greed can corrupt and even a little Pokeshipping romance with Misty almost confessing to the fact that she has deep feelings for her best friend Ash. The way the plot is laid out makes it acceptable for both kids (who can esily see the obvious plot) and for teens and adults (who can see the intricately woven hiden plot).

Personally I believe that Pokemon is great for all ages, anime and non-anime fan alike, and, along with Harry Potter, is possible the best thing a young kid can be interested in.

I do find it strange, however, that probably the best Pokemon movie was made to go along with it's worst season, the Orange Islands League.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well, I'm 18, and *I* enjoyed it..., 2 April 2001
By A Customer
Well, I saw this in the cinema when it came out... it's wonderful. There's a better plot to this film than of the first one, and a moral that's just as important. I think that even if you're not a fan of Pokémon that this could possibly interest you...

When Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno are kidnapped by an evil Pokémon Collector (he's not a trainer, he just collects them) it's up to Ash to gather mystical stones and save the world. Again.

And that's about it, in a nutshell. An age old battle between good and evil, and proving that one person *can* make a difference if they try.

Well, at least kids will love it if nothing else...
