Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Pokémon Trading Card Game is a Game Boy Color title based on the popular strategy card game from Wizards of the Coast. Fans of the existing red, blue and yellow versions of Pokémon will find this game to be less redundant than earlier Game Boy Pocket Monster offerings. This game is more of a hybrid of its predecessors--mixing strategy card gameplay and role-playing game elements--with highly successful results.

The story in Pokémon Trading Card Game is basically the same as that of the original Pokémon titles, only with new character and feature names substituted. Instead of Professor Oak, players meet Dr Mason. Gym Leaders are named Club Masters, battles are duels and so forth. Learning the card game is a breeze thanks to the inclusion of comprehensive instructions and an in-depth tutorial. Although some minor changes have been made, the method of play is virtually identical to the original card game, and just as addictive. While much shorter than the Pokémon games, the gameplay here doesn't involve random and repetitive battles, and follows a less linear path.

Although Pokémon Trading Card Game would seem to turn a social experience into a solitary one, it allows for and encourages interacting with other game owners. Duels can be fought between players via a game link cable, and cards and decks can be traded using the infrared communications port. The most interesting feature here is the "card pop!" option, which generates one new card for each player when communicating wirelessly; the catch is that you can't "card pop!" the same person again for a while after doing so, thus limiting the feature's appeal. --Joe Hon

4.0 out of 5 stars card collecting pokémaniacs dream..., 22 Nov 2001
It's a game. Based on playing cards. While it might not sound like it's going to bring you hours of fun on a portable machine, sprinkle that little bit of pokémon dazzle, and weave a little nintendo magic, and you've got a simple, but addictive game.
This is a game which pokémon haters will obviously stay well clear off, but for the rest it is a joy to behold. Fans of the card game will instantly be able to pick up and play, while gamers new to the card experience will slowly be led in learning the basics until they too are a true master.
Graphics - although the GBC can't exactly produce the most stunning visuals around, it does push the machine to its full and provides some colourful worlds for the hero to explore.
sound - the game's downside although true for every game. The GBC can only manage a few beeps and screechs, but it does well to produce something worth listening too.
Playability - has an excellent learning curve so even beginners will be building powerful decks in no time atall
lifespan - with several places to conquer, and the inspiration to "catch 'em all" this will last a mammoth amount of time.
overall - excellent game which will keep you coming back for more. You either love it, or hate it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pokemon Trading Card Game, 18 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This is a great little game to teach the kids and adults alike the correct way to play the Pokemon Trading Card game. Anyone who has an interest in card games may well find they enjoy this game. It`s a little confusing to start off but once you get the hang of it (full instructions are in the game itself) the game becomes a challange. Building up the correct type of deck to take on the opposition is a challange and gives the game an added depth of play. Younger children may find it difficult as there is text to read and understand between turns. I find this type game to be the sort of thing that keeps me coming back for another try and it will keep the dedicated Pokemon trader busy for a long time.

Well worth the money!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Pokemon Trading Card Game, 28 Oct 2000
I got to play this game off a friend and I must say I found it hard at first. It's a great and addictive game and a must for all pokemon fans out there. You will first be tutored by Doctor Mason and get a practice before the game start so that the beginners can understand the game clearly. Everytime you win, you get 2 booster packets and read your mail after or before every gym leader for Doctor Mason sends you mail in which you get an extra booster packet! The goal of the game is to get all 8 medals before entering for the Pokemon Dome to duel against what is like the Elite four. At the end you will win some of the rarest cards there is!! You also have a enemy called Ronald who will duel you sometimes and if you should win him, he will give you a rare card in his collection. Like the other Pokemon game, you have 3 decks to choose from: Charmander and friends deck, Squirtle and friends deck and Bulbasur and friends deck. Depending on which deck you choose, your opponents will either be easy or hard for you. You go up to the trainers to duel them and sometimes they will not duel you(e.g. Psychic) if you have not got a certain number of cards or a certain number of medals. This is the same for some gym leaders. If you really want an easy win, go for the Charmander and friends deck. Good luck and be the best Pokemon Trading Card master!!!!
