Graindelavoix have here created a kind of musical portrait of 13th century Brabant, broadly characterised as "mystics, monks and minstrels". The selections include ornamented plainchant (with two and three voice discant) and responsoria employing parallel organum, organum purum and discant, songs by female mystics - including works by Hadewijch and the sequence "O Ecclesia" by Hildegard from a manuscript at the Abbey of Villers, and courtly pieces with instrumental accompaniment.

The ensemble Graindelavoix aim to avoid preconceived notions of how early music would have been performed, and go beyond written notation and explore with improvisation, ornamentation and vocal gestures. This is another outstanding disc by them providing fresh insights into the performance of early music repertoire.

The booklet supplies some excellent notes (in English, French, German, Dutch and Spanish), with Latin/French/Dutch sung texts plus English translations.
