Terrible things are happening in Walmer. The village blacksmith and his wife both die at the same time, but of different poisons administered seperately. How could this have happened? Katherine Swinbrooke, physician, apothecary and reluctant sleuth, is called in to find out. Other strange things have happened recently in the village, the death, apparently an accident, of Sir Henry Beauchamp's wife, and the murder of a group of Lancastrian supporters. Can Katherine sort it all out? Do you doubt it for a moment? Fans of Katherine will be glad to know that she is finally married to her hunky Irish boyfriend Colum Murtagh, and that she is enjoying married life very much. Colum lures her into bed whenever he can get her to take a break from solving murders. As with all the books in this series, there are colourful and interesting descriptions of medieval life, and lots of varied characters. I felt that there were perhaps an excessive number of muders in this book (two or three murders per mystery is about enough, I think), but of course Katherine can handle it. This is an enjoyable edition to this fun series.

This is the first time I've read Kathryn Swinbrooke and have read the entire series in order within a week.
The way she handled the mysteries, her patients and the development of her love for her irishman was really brilliant.
I've read Brother Athlestan and Hugh Corbett, but consider Mistress Swinbrooke by far the best. Hope there will be more to follow .

I can't put down these Kathryn Swinbrooke books. I love the relationships between Kathryn and her houshold, and her 'Irishman'. The characters are interesting and historical facts add to the richness of the story. Great storyline.

I think this is one of the best of the Kathryn series; the characters are well drawn, and the story flows convincingly. I always enjoyed this author's books. When will the next one be running off the press!?
