"Her knowledge of the London area in which the Victorian Frances lived is detailed and cleverly given in a way that avoids any tedium." --"Mystery Women"

Product Description

When a customer of William Doughty's chemist shop dies of strychnine poisoning after drinking medicine he dispensed, William is blamed, and the family faces ruin. William's daughter, nineteen year old Frances, determines to redeem her ailing father's reputation and save the business. She soon becomes convinced that the death was murder, but unable to convince the police, she turns detective. Armed only with her wits, courage and determination, and aided by some unconventional new friends, Frances uncovers a startling deception and solves a ten year old murder. There will be more deaths, and a secret in her own family will be revealed before the killer is unmasked, and Frances will find that her life has changed forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one., 14 April 2011

This review is from: The Poisonous Seed: A Frances Doughty Mystery (Paperback)
This was one of those books I didn't want to put down (even to walk home from the station, and I avoided walking into anything while reading as I walked!).

Written with a wealth of detail, in a style that evokes the atmosphere of London of the early 1880's and draws the reader into the day-to-day lives of the characters, to experience alongside them the events as they unfold.

If you like a good period-style murder mystery, in a book that delivers more than just the mystery, then this is probably the book for you. I know I shall be waiting eagerly for the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 3 Feb 2012
This review is from: The Poisonous Seed: A Frances Doughty Mystery (Paperback)
Well done Linda - a fantastic read. Not many authors are so good I nearly miss my station on the way home (or make me happy to have a rail delay!) but I nearly did a number of times. The story is well researched and I really wanted to help Francis find out the truth. Didn't even guess whodunnit until the solution began to unravel and then it was a well thought out ending. Can not wait to read the next one - will not be waiting for the paperback !

5.0 out of 5 stars A good start., 16 Sep 2011
This review is from: The Poisonous Seed: A Frances Doughty Mystery (Paperback)
This is the first in what I hope will become a long series. Frances Doughty lives up to her name. She is an intelligent woman in a world of victorian men and thier predjudices. It makes you groan out loud on her behalf with frustration! A clever plot and well written, I look forward to book 2.
