3.0 out of 5 stars Not my poison this time, 19 April 2009

Is this series becoming a little "tired"? I found myself less than gripped by this and I'm a dedicated fan of Brett. Not a convincing plot and just how much Chilean Chardonnay can Carole and Jude drink every lunch-time - or in each other's gardens? For me it's becoming less than realistic, the pace of this was rather slow and apart from Carole and Jude, who are an amusing and charming pair, the characters were flat or rather exaggerated - like Ted's ex-wife Sylvia and her new man. There was the usual social comment which always livens things up but this certainly is not my favourite. In fact I'm not sure Brett has captured the essence of the first three in the series. Not sure whether I'll read anymore but I do like the setting of the South Downs. That is very engaging and I like Carole and Jude too - need a stronger plot to bring it all out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gentle Marplesque murder mystery, 27 Mar 2009

This review is from: The Poisoning in the Pub: The Fethering Mysteries (Hardcover)
Once more there is trouble in Fethering as Carole and Jude the local amateur sleuths try to find out who is behind a campaign to destroy the reputation of their local pub. It begins as a case of food poisoning but soon becomes much more sinister as it turns to murder.

This is a gentle story which does not have the gory details that have become the standard in a lot of crime fiction. The Fethering books are a return to an all together calmer style of writing. They are very Agatha Christie with the busy body sleuths digging out the dirt behind village life. There are perhaps a few too many Chilean Chardonnay's and if you are an action junky these are not for you but it is an entertaining read that has a clear plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pub food will never be the same . . ., 26 Mar 2009

This review is from: The Poisoning in the Pub: The Fethering Mysteries (Hardcover)
Jude and Carole - two of the most unlikely sleuths in crime fiction - have first hand experience of the latest spot of bother in Fethering. They both ate the scallops at the Crown and Anchor where Ted, the landlord, is a friend. But food poisoning is only the start of the problems in the pub and the seaside town of Fethering.

As they've been personally affected by the dodgy shellfish they are keen to find out what's going on. As usual there are misunderstandings between the two friends and Ted seems even more morose than usual because he's certain someone's got it in for him and his business. The story rattles along at a cracking rate and it's full of this author's usual humorous characters.

I particularly liked Kelly-Marie - the girl with learning difficulties who's determined to stand on her own feet and the pompous councillor who tries to browbeat everyone into his way of thinking is an absolute gem. If you haven't read any of this series each story can be read on its own. But if you read all the rest you get a better viewpoint on the relationship between Carole and Jude. I loved it and thought it was one of the best in the series.
