Review

PRAISE FOR The Hangman’s Daughter series

"Swift and sure, compelling as any conspiracy theory, persuasive as any spasm of paranoia, The Dark Monk grips you at the base of your skull and doesn't let go." —Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked and Out of Oz

"Oliver Pötzsch has brought to life the heady smells and tastes, the true reality of an era we've never seen quite like this before. The hangman Jakob and his feisty daughter Magdalena are characters we will want to root for in many books to come. —Katherine Neville, bestselling author of The Eight and The Magic Circle

"I loved every page, character and plot twist of The Hangman’s Daughter, an inventive historical novel about a 17th-century hangman’s quest to save a witch—from himself." —Scott Turow

"Oliver Pötzsch takes readers on a darkly atmospheric visit to seventeenth-century Bavaria in his latest adventure. With enough mystery and intrigue to satisfy those who like gritty historical fiction, The Dark Monk has convincing characters, rip-roaring action, and finely-drawn settings." —Deborah Harkness, author of A Discovery of Witches and the forthcoming Shadow of Night

"In this subtle, meticulously crafted story, every word is a possible clue, and the characters are so engaging that it’s impossible not to get involved in trying to help them figure the riddle out." —Oprah.com

This is the 4th in the Hangman's Daughter series and after reading the first 3 I thought it would be difficult to top those tales. This is a good read and though based in the medieval past of rural Bavaria it is still a good detective story and a real page turner. Who would enjoy this book? Those people who like an historical novel similar to Ellis Peters or Lindsey Davies and others of a similar nature will enjoy the attention to historical detail and those who like a good 'who dunnit' and are less bothered about the historical accuracy will also find it a good read as the historical facts are entered lightly and seamlessly into the tale and are indeed part of the overall story.

All of 'The Hangman's Daughters' books have been brilliant, and this one was no exception. I highly recommend them all.

I think the plot works well but the lengthy description of what was happening at any given time dragged on and on. Quite predictable ending where all is well although I suspected Jakob's wife was not going to make its sadly not inspired to read another by the author as I expect it will be quite predictable.
Good plot make it shorter and pacy.

Another successful novel by this author. Translation into English excellent. Love the fact that his heroine has a mind of her own and not the usual 17th century 'shrinking violet". Hard to believe that the Kuisls' contempt of the ruling classes would have been tolerated given that they were considered outcasts!

Found this harder to get through than the others. Not sure why. Still a good read but slower to develop

I loved these books! brilliant . I felt quite sad once I had finished the series . Magdalena was a brilliant character and so was her father with his complicated past . I didn't want to put the books down,

I enjoyed this but this was not as good or as gripping as the others. Was not my favourite one.
