I love Kresley Cole's clever story lines and persuasive writing style, until I read The Poison Princess. On the face of it, this book appears another home run with Tarot card characters, a secretive Alpha Male, a girl with her own secrets and a blend of romance, the occult and good old fashioned action. Well, how did it all go so wrong. I found the end of days storyline depressing, the characters unbelievable, the chemistry between characters erratic and the book in general long and drawn out. The actual Poison Princess is nothing more than a confused young girl, The Arcana, including Death and the the fool, are at first dreams then voices in her head. Once Kresley could do no wrong but this is a miss-fire. IaD (immortals after dark) is the gold standard in supernatural adventure romances. This is not IaD.

Firstly I have to say that I absolutely loved the story and the concept which I don't think I have heard of before. For Kresley's first dabble in the world of YA I think she has written a brilliant first book which I am sure will become as successful a series as the Immortals After Dark (Adult content). I can't wait to read the rest of The Arcana Chronicles which I believe continues with the estimated release date of October 2013 for the second book and I have already pre-ordered! Being a long time reader and fan of Kresley's Immortals After Dark series and having read (and liked) The Sutherland Brothers and MacCarrick Brother's series' which are all very firmly adult content books I was really curious to see what her take on YA would be and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have been absolutely gripped to the book for the last day reading it every chance I was given. I would definitely recommend this book to either long time readers of Kresley's or anyone thinking of reading a new take on an apocalyptic, dystopian future - absolutely unputdownable!

The concept of the book and I am assuming the series will center on all of them at some point is that the 22 Major Arcanum cards (The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Justice, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Strength, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World) in Tarot are real people. The remaining 56 cards in Tarot are the Minor Arcanum cards which can better be compared to our 'normal' everyday playing cards and I don't think they could really be developed into real people or I could be totally wrong and Kresley manages to do this!

The mix of page-turning thrilling adventure with sizzling romance is simply brilliant, which combined with such extraordinary imaginative vision literally took my breath away. I have never felt such a roller coaster of emotions when reading a sensational YA novel; from heartbreak to anger, to joy and excitement this story is just so well written. There were times when I loathed the main characters and found their actions hard to comprehend, yet Evie and Jack were two unforgettable well-drawn characters whose in-depth history was so compelling that they `made' the story. This post-apocalyptic tale reminded me of J Kagawa's The Eternity Cure, with after the `Flash' was Zombie-like creatures and cannibals who shrunk from sunlight and `everyone for their own' attitude to the remaining survivors. The uniquely original storyline based around a deck of Taro cards, {with Evie as the Empress (or) poison princess} was an inspired concept that worked well with the apocalyptic theme. I was sat gripping the pages tightly deeply absorbed in this tantalizing tale of temptation, deleterious danger and teenage troubles in one explosive read.

"The characters on Tarot cards are real. The Huntress, the Fool, the Lovers...and eighteen other Major Arcana all exist. These warriors, femme fatales, magicians, and devils each have uniquely lethal powers. And they're coming for me. To survive, I'll have to embrace my own terrifying abilities. But if Jack ever beholds what I truly am, will he abandon me to my fate?"

16 year old Evangeline Greene suffers from {what her mother considers} a kind of madness or rather horrifying hallucination, and visions of what lies in the future with the coming of an apocalyptic event.

Evie has just been released from CLC, sent there by her mother after having strange visions and dreams. That was over the summer. Now she's back home just in time for the new term to start. But if she thought things would go back to normal she was wrong. Not only are there a couple of new kids at school, including Jackson, from the wrong side of the bayou, but she's having visions of the apocalypse...right in the middle of school, she's visited by Matthew and by Death. Yep, Death. On his horse and everything. As Jackson gets on her last nerve and she fears losing her boyfriend, her vision comes to pass, killing most of the population. Alone with just her mother, injured by a bagman, things are looking pretty bleak until Jackson shows up one day on his motorbike, urging her to leave before the militia men arrive. Evie leaves with Jackson, and they begin to grow closer on their road trip to find her grandmother, the attraction between them becomes hard to ignore. But after stumbling across Selena, and learning more about herself from Matthew via his visions, things start to heat up. Selena makes a move on Jackson, Evie rescues Matthew, Matthew and Evie get captured by militia men and stumble across Finn, another card, and as Evie and Jack finally reveal their feelings for each other to themselves and each other, Evie is haunted by what she will become. After stumbling across Jack and a certain blonde, she leaves to strike out on her own. Ending up in the hands of a villain, will she finally embrace her powers? Why is Death so interested in her? What's the deal with the Arcana thing?

Okay so this book was totally different from what I was expecting, I literally cannot get over it, it left me with a book hangover!
