Product Description

In her young adult debut, #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole introduces The Arcana Chronicles, a spellbinding new dystopian series filled with riveting action, the dark mysticism of Tarot cards, and breathtaking romance.

She could save the world--or destroy it.
Sixteen year old Evangeline "Evie" Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future--and they're still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.

But she can't do either alone.

With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can't totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?

Who can Evie trust?
As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it's not always clear who is on which side...

2.0 out of 5 stars Great writer shame about the book 8 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I love Kresley Cole's clever story lines and persuasive writing style, until I read The Poison Princess. On the face of it, this book appears another home run with Tarot card characters, a secretive Alpha Male, a girl with her own secrets and a blend of romance, the occult and good old fashioned action. Well, how did it all go so wrong. I found the end of days storyline depressing, the characters unbelievable, the chemistry between characters erratic and the book in general long and drawn out. The actual Poison Princess is nothing more than a confused young girl, The Arcana, including Death and the the fool, are at first dreams then voices in her head. Once Kresley could do no wrong but this is a miss-fire. IaD (immortals after dark) is the gold standard in supernatural adventure romances. This is not IaD.

Um...Okay...I'm not quite sure how I feel about this.

I liked the whole will they/wont they thing between Evie and Jackson but at the same time it drove me mad with the continuous misunderstandings and stuff between them. Why couldn't they just explain themselves better?!

What I wasn't particularly a fan of was the tarot card thing. I'll admit it grew on me throughout and at the end I'd gotten used to it and was more into the concept but at the start I had no idea what was happening and sort of skated over the dreams and such.

After the ending I will admit to be very intrigued with how the rest of the series will play out so I will be reading the second book soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review by Emily - Year 8 7 May 2014
Format:Paperback
Poison Princess is full of mystery and twists, the questions posed within the narrative aren’t straightforward. Drawing you into the plot in order to gain the answers.

The setting and character tends to switch allowing a deeper leave of understanding however, this is initially very confusing but does weave together eventually. From my perspective it felt as if the pace of the story took a little while to get going.

The main character, Evie Greene, a teenage girl, although Evie is anything but normal. She has visions and hears voices, just like her grandmother before her. This is the cause of her being sent away from home.

The use of Tarot Cards within the story was extremely well developed and executed, the in-depth explanations as to their significance added a high level of understanding to events within the plot.

Throughout the book Evie becomes more aware of her powers and how to use them to her strength, even if she doesn’t want to. Evie discovers that she is not the only one with powers. There are others; some good, some bad. An ancient prophecy is being played out, a battle of good versus evil and it is not always clear who is on which side.

One character in the book that plays and important part in Evie’s life is Jackson Deveaux, he is like a bodyguard helping her find her destiny, always trying to uncover her secrets. Although there is a hint of romance in the story it isn’t the main focus.

My favourite part of the book is at the end, when everything is comes together to make sense. Although I did feel as if the ending was a little abrupt. A cliffhanger type ending enticing you to read more. While answers were given more questions were posed. Hopefully I can start the next book soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Poison Princess 5 Oct 2012
By S. Wilson TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Firstly I have to say that I absolutely loved the story and the concept which I don't think I have heard of before. For Kresley's first dabble in the world of YA I think she has written a brilliant first book which I am sure will become as successful a series as the Immortals After Dark (Adult content). I can't wait to read the rest of The Arcana Chronicles which I believe continues with the estimated release date of October 2013 for the second book and I have already pre-ordered! Being a long time reader and fan of Kresley's Immortals After Dark series and having read (and liked) The Sutherland Brothers and MacCarrick Brother's series' which are all very firmly adult content books I was really curious to see what her take on YA would be and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and have been absolutely gripped to the book for the last day reading it every chance I was given. I would definitely recommend this book to either long time readers of Kresley's or anyone thinking of reading a new take on an apocalyptic, dystopian future - absolutely unputdownable!

The concept of the book and I am assuming the series will center on all of them at some point is that the 22 Major Arcanum cards (The Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, The Empress, The Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Justice, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Strength, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, The World) in Tarot are real people. The remaining 56 cards in Tarot are the Minor Arcanum cards which can better be compared to our 'normal' everyday playing cards and I don't think they could really be developed into real people or I could be totally wrong and Kresley manages to do this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 25 Jun 2014

I love Kresley Cole and this is my favourite book of hers, which, in my opinion, exceeds the IaD series. The storyline is original and the characters are magnetic. I love the way the apocalyptic, dystopian world is interweaved with the Tarot theme. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
