One of her best 3 Mar 2007
By A. Butterfield TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This is definitely amongst the best Agatha Christie novels I've read, and it feels even better in this lovely 'new' facsimile edition. The novel caused a stir (relatively speaking) at the time because it's written in the first person... and particularly for another reason! Read it to find out. The first person narrative feels odd at first, but the narrator is very believable. This is a well structured and complex plot. A semi-retired Poirot is looked at from a different angle, but he is just as effective and there are some nice set pieces - in particular the beautifully written 'mah jong' scene that's a joy to read. The denoument is satisfying. Highly recommended.

Good solid Christie 13 July 1998
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This struck me as almost a Christie pastiche; the number of (perfectly-timed) secret liaisons in the gazebo, secret engagements, secret marriages, poisoners, blackmailers, murders, suicide, unacknowledged children, torn scraps of cloth and so on per captia seems high even for Dame Agatha. Still, a fun read.

Maybe because I'd heard about how shocking and controversial the ending is, I twigged who the murderer was by about chapter four. Still, it was fun to watch the buildup and conclusion, and we get a fresh (although quite Hastings-like) view of Poirot. Three stars, but then I'm a hard grader! *8)

Very entertaining 11 Nov 2010
Format:Audio Cassette
I have just finished listening to this from the 2001 cassette version read by Nigel Anthony. Being retired I have taken up walking for exercise and I buy the audio books and transfer them to MP3 to listen to on my walks. With such audio books the quality of the recording and the performance of the reader can unfortunately vary considerably. I am pleased to say here that both are outstanding on this version which is still available new on CD from Amazon and can be found second hand at various places for the cassette version.

I confess to have not read Agatha Christie in book form though I am a big fan of the films and TV series that have been shown over the years. Being a slow reader I trend to "forget" or miss earlier clues as I slowly plough my way through which is probably why the films and audio books suit me better.

Regarding the story, it is one I have not come across before. I have to say that the way the characters (not too many thankfully) are introduced and built up and the way the clues are cleverly dropped into the plot kept me mesmerised throughout the entire 3 hours or so the recording lasted. Nigel Anthony is brilliant and had a different "voice" for each character. The story line is typically Christie and I confess had me guessing (wrongly!) at the identity of the miscreant right up the last few minutes. All in all, very entertaining and well recommended.
