Product Description

Three-in-one omnibus of Murder in Mesopotamia, Death on the Nile and Appointment with Death, plus an exclusive preface by Agatha Christie on the character of Poirot.

There is nothing exotic about murder, no matter where it takes place. Away from home, Hercule Poirot finds that he cannot escape death, even when travelling across Mesopotamia, the Nile and Petra.

MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA
At the Hassanieh dig deep in the Iraqi desert, the wife of a celebrated archaeologist is suffering from terrifying hallucinations. Apparent madness – until a murderer strikes.

DEATH ON THE NILE
The tranquillity of a Nile cruise is shattered by the discovery that a young girl has been shot through the head. Stylish and beautiful, she had everything – even enemies.

APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH
And among the towering red cliffs of Petra sits the corpse of Mrs Boynton. A tiny puncture mark on her wrist is the only sign of the fatal injection that killed her.

Based on Agatha Christie's own experiences in the 1930s travelling with her husband, archaeologist Sir Max Mallowan, this trilogy of bestselling novels represents crime fiction at its very best. Here at last they are collected together in a single volume for Christmas.

I have last read Agatha Christie's Poirot stories way back in the late 1980's. Thus began my love affair with the crime/thriller/mystery genre. After browsing through this genre a month ago, I decided to return to Dame Agatha's famous detective. I was worried that the plot and characters would have been too familiar from the tv series' which I also enjoy. I am relieved to say, 'not at all'... Although the tv series is faithful to the books, its not slavishly so. I truly enjoyed the book. What is good about the Omnibus editions is that you can pick and choose what you want to read and when.
If you need a change from the sometimes too sophisticated contemporary detective story, go with Agatha Christie. Her love of the Orient comes through in this series and serves as a nice setting for her clever sleuth, Poirot. The biggest fun is trying to work out 'who dunnit'...Enjoy.

Poirot: The Orient 20 Dec 2003
Format:Paperback
MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA: A woman found dead in her bedroom, she has been bashed on the head by a heavy object. A blood stain on the carpet and a strange floating mask. Everyone is suspect from the rather strange priest to the locals of Mesopotamia. Can Poirot work it out? DEATH ON THE NILE: An extremely rich dead young lady, a distraught, now disabled husband, a necklace of pearls and a 'splash'. Poirot must find the murderer quick but before he does so two others are killed. Has Poirot finally met his match? All takes place on a luxury boat on the Nile. APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH: A family controlled by the militaristic mother. A person disguised as an attendant and a leathal injection. Nothing is quite what it seems but will Poirot reach the right conclusion?
All 3 books are brilliant, each with its own wonderful individual twist. Agatha Christie at her best.

Murder in Mesopotamia (2/5)

Despite the exotic setting, this is a rather dull country house mystery with a fanciful, and highly incredible, solution. Poirot's late arrival on the scene does not help matters and the only relief is provided by an interesting narrator.

Death on the Nile (5/5)

A beautiful Swiss watch of a novel, in which detailed plotting and compelling psychology combine to produce arguably the perfect example of an Agatha Christie mystery.

Appointment with Death (3/5)

This novel is briskly written, with some effectively chilling characterisation of the victim in the early chapters, but the denouement is rather weakly handled.
