Poirot Collector's Set, Vol. 7 [1989] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

This was as superb as The ABC Murders as filmed in 1992 . Nick Dear's script laid the basis for a faithful adaptation as there where no significant deviations from the book in question . In short it was a dark menacing tale that kept the viewer on the edge of their seat . The casting has been inspired as Zoe Wanamaker has settled brilliantly into the role as the batty author Mrs Oliver and thus provides the kind of comedic relief that Hugh Fraser often supplied as Captain Hastings . Mr Yelland is first rate as George the valet who serves the drinks as deftly as Miss Lemon in her prime and Richard Hope does really well as a Japp style investigating officer who is dogged , persistent and honest . Supt Spence is the best top copper in the series since 2003 . It is nice in the incidental music to hear snatches of the old theme tune and to hear the man himself asking the taxi to drive him to Whitehaven Mansions - brings back fond memories....

David Suchet is on form as Poirot and the directing is great ! I am delighted by the lack of any childish shock tactics - no simulated sex ( as in After The Funeral ), no abortion or terrorism ( as in Taken At The Flood ) , no homophobic story-lines ( as in Cards On The Table ) and no hanging scenes ( as in Five Little Pigs ). It is a mark of common sense that such rubbish has been left out and as such ensures that Mrs McGinty's Dead represents a great improvement on much of what was filmed in 2003-05 . This is so good that it could have been filmed during the golden age of Poirot that was 1989-2002 !

All in all an excellent purchase and a super way to pass a spare 90 minutes !

Poirot is always a treat to watch and Mrs McGinty's dead is one of the best stories in the canon.
This episode is stylishly filmed and the quality of the acting and screenplay are excellent.
The direction is superb and David Suchet brings more qualities to the role the longer he plays it.
Some people may disagree but i prefer these newer episodes to the older ones, and Ariadne Oliver is a great foil to Poirot's seriousness, note the scene in which she accidentally throws an apple core at Poirot himself.
I can't wait to see if David manages to film the whole Poirot canon, but in the meantime i'm thoroughly enjoying what remains of the stories.
10/10.

Some strong acting but disappointing if you have first read the book. Some of the threads and characters are missing, so it becomes a different story.
The army major's wife, Mrs Summerhayes - so brilliantly portrayed in the novel - was particularly weak. I missed the character of Deirdre. The ending was totally changed and was rather absurd.
When a story is as brilliantly conceived as 'Mrs McGinty is Dead,' I wonder why people feel they need to adapt it with such violence.
