Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Two words suffice to sum up the enduring and endearing qualities of Agatha Christie's Poirot: David Suchet. Despite all the careful Art Deco trappings, the light, spacious sets and luxurious country locations, despite the excellent supporting cast and atmospheric music score, despite all its admirable qualities this series would be for nothing without Suchet's magnificent grasp on the fussy little Belgian detective. Poirot's obsessive mannerisms, his mania for sartorial detail, his maniacal devotion to personal hygiene (especially when it comes to looking after the moustache) are all rendered exactly by Suchet, clearly as much a perfectionist in this respect as his alter ego in every other.

Buoyed by their success with Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes, Granada TV brought a lighter touch to Poirot, which first aired in 1989, and this series is often breezily humorous in contrast to the gloomy Victorian Gothic of its predecessor. The producers took similar care in maintaining the spirit of Christie's original books even when--as with the Holmes adventures--the screenwriters occasionally took pardonable liberties with story and characters. Suchet is ably supported by Hugh Fraser as the Bertie Woosterish Captain Hastings, Philip Jackson as the tenaciously bulldog-like Inspector Japp, and Pauline Moran as Poirot's often exasperated PA, Miss Lemon. --Mark Walker

5.0 out of 5 stars Poirot at its best, 21 May 2003
Finally the entire "Agatha Christie's Poirot" collection comes in one single box containing 31 discs, one movie per disc, two episodes per disc. David Suchet IS Poirot, having the looks, the mannerisms and even the accent. Even Hastings is near perfect.
This collection contains: The Adventure of the Clapham Cook, Murder in the Mews, The Adventure of Johnnie Waverly, 4 & 20 Blackbirds, The Third Floor Flat, Triangle At Rhodes, Problem At Sea, The Incredible Theft, The King of Clubs, The Dream, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Lord Edgware Dies, Hercule Poirot's Christmas, Peril At End House Part 1 & 2, The Veiled Lady, The Lost Mine, The Cornish Mystery, The Disappearance of Mr Davenheim, Double Sin, The Adventure of the Cheap Flat, The Kidnapped PM, The Adventure of the Western Star, How Does Your Garden Grow?, The Million Dollar Bond Robbery, The Plymouth Express, Wasps' Nest, The Tragedy at Marsdon Manor, The Double Clue, The Mystery of the Spanish Chest, The Theft of the Royal Ruby, The Affair At The Victory Ball, The Mystery of Hunter's Lodge, The Adventure of the Egyptian Tomb, The Underdog, Yellow Iris, The Case of The Missing Will, The Adventure of the Italian Nobleman, The Chocolate Box, The Dead Man's Mirror, Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, The ABC Murders, Hickory Dickory Dock, Dumb Witness , Murder On The Links, Death In The Clouds, One Two Buckle My Shoe, Murder in Mesopotomia, Evil Under The Sun.
It's probably the greatest whodunnit ever, the one-hour episodes are good, but this collection really shines on the 13 full-length movies. All of these are faithful adaptations of Agatha Christie's books. Dame Christie's fans will be delighted, but mystery fans in general won't be disappointed either.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite TV series of all time, 13 April 2004
By A Customer
I received this comprehensive boxed set as a Christmas present and, although I already had almost almost every single David Suchet "Poirot" episode on bought or home-recorded videotape, I was nonetheless ecstatic: This superbly produced and acted series is my favorite TV program of all time, and David Suchet truly the embodiment of Christie's Poirot. (One very minor flaw I have noticed is that some of the photos on the DVD covers do not match the correct episodes.)

I am delighted that Suchet has resumed production of the remaining Poirot stories, starting with "5 Little Pigs" and "Sad Cypress." These new episodes are, of course, not included in this set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suchet a treat in television classic, 10 May 2003
By
From start to finish this series has been a treat to watch and re-watch time after time. David Suchet is incomparable as Hercule Poirot: he has the figure, looks, impeccable accent and an unbelievable acting talent. Although some of the adaptations do not adhere entirely to the Christie books, they are in every way a reflection of the spirit of them. Watching the whole canon from start to finish, one can see a development in Poirot's relationships with Inspector Japp (marvelously played by Philip Jackson), Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) and Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran), that is not apparent from watching occasional episodes on the television. It is well worth buying the whole lot at once just for this reason. Re-living the more romantic episodes (The Double Clue, The Chocolate Box) is also a reminder of the multi-faceted nature of the series.

Perfect for lovers of period drama and detective stories alike.
