Graham Halliwell: alto sax / Simon H. Fell double bass [1997 (52 mins.) in jewel box] Acoustic duo improvisations, beautifully recorded

Review

It's good to hear Fell in such an exposed space again. His work as a composer is undoubtedly important but, like his hero Charles Mingus, it's easy to forget what a fine bass player he is. --Richard Cochrane RESONANCE

Sounds lift off from the instruments and appear to speak pure ideas. Both the burden of tradition and the jadedness of repertoire are jettisoned as Halliwell and Fell vault themselves into the next chapter of jazz. Superb. --Ben Watson HIFI NEWS & RECORD REVIEW

Improvised music of the highest order. Halliwell wears a coat of many colors, all of which shine with brilliant intensity. --Steven A. Loewy ALL MUSIC GUIDE (USA)

Bass-Sax Duo Exposed 19 Feb. 2009
By Alfie Cooke - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Do not expect to hear something akin to Ray Brown walking merrily beneath a post-Parker alto. This music comes from the British school of free improvisation (as opposed to Free Jazz). As such it can be angular and jarring in places if its not the kind of music you're used to. Simon Fell is one of the treasures of free improvised music in Britain (although he has recently moved operations to mainland Euriope). A lot of his music fuses his bass playing with electronics and "found sounds" but on this recording he plays purely acoustically, alongside alto saxophonist Graham Halliwell. Halliwell is incredibly under-recorded - appearing on a handful of recordings by Fell - but this allows him to be heard clearly and without the distractions of other horns, showing what an interesting improviser he can be.
