Product Description

Review
""Addresses nearly every question that you could think to ask about pointe shoes."

Product Description
Expanded and updated throughout, this guide provides a thorough examination of pointe shoes and pointe technique. Dancers quickly benefit from the most current research that offers the most recent information on hundreds of contemporary designs, materials, products, and suppliers. It illuminates the shoemaking process and gives advice about how to best fit, care for and custom-order shoes. The basics of point readiness, pointe technique, different pointe methods and the history of pointe are discussed. Includes a handy reference on pointe-related injuries and their remedies. The authors also provide an authoritative pointe class syllabus for teachers and students. In the last chapter four prominent ballerinas talk about their shoes, how they found the perfect fit and the joy of dancing on pointe.

5.0 out of 5 stars In-depth and very informative, 28 Dec 2001
By A Customer
I Would recommend this book to those who are just beginning pointe work, As it goes into great detail about the shoes how they should fit, how to make them more comftable, foot anatomy, makes of pointe shoes, and general infomation. I wish this book had of been published when I started Pointe work many years ago! However it is an good read from start to finish even when you have been dancing for as long as you care to remember!.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little deceptive, but still useful as an occasional reference book., 20 Mar 2007
*
As a male dance teacher with no experience on pointe myself, I think it vitally important for ALL teachers to study pointe work thoroughly and have a solid knowledge of the technique involved. I was really excited to hear about this book, and thinking I had found a really in depth guide to pointe work training and technique, I have to admit to being a little disappointed.

My main concern is regarding the lack of information relating to the actual TEACHING of pointe work. What there is tends to be either hypothetical or philosophical and in short, not particularly relevant to the local, amateur level dance school. There are interesting sections on pointe work basics, overviews of well known training methods and some sample classes, but unfortunately, ZERO content that would be useful to a teacher in a practial sense. Putting it bluntly, this is not the book to buy if that's what you are looking for. Most of the leading UK dance organisations (IDTA, RAD etc.), have superb publications on pointe work that would make better teaching aids. There are a number of other pointe work books available though Amazon, but I have not yet read and reviewed any of them.

HOWEVER - Where this particular book is really valuable is if you think of it purely as a reference book on the 'implications' of learning pointe. There are some excellent sections about the feet and shoes, common problems that occur and the best ways of looking after both. This information seems common sense when seen in black and white, but it is funny how few teachers really make sure their girls know how to look after their dancing 'tools' properly.

Another big plus if the fact that if you don't know how to properly fit a pointe shoe now - you DEFINITELY will after reading this book!!!

Also, for the totally committed ballet student and perfectionist teacher, there is a lengthy chapter on different makes, styles and shapes of shoe out there on the market, noting the attributes for each one. This is valuable information if you really struggle when advising girls which pointe shoes to get or if your girls are having particular difficulty working in the ones they have at the moment. There are other snippets of brilliant reference material throughout the book, but from a teachers point of view, this is probably the most useful area it covers.

SO, IN SUMMARY...

The publisher's blurb is a little misleading, but this is still a useful book to keep on the shelf with your syllabus and dancewear catalogues.

The main negative - a lot of the text relating to training and technique is actually useless for teachers working at the amateur or majors syllabus level. There is a lot of debatable research and opinions that are far from being acceptable as SAFE dance practice.

On the positive side - you will learn everything there is to know about the pointe shoes themselves and how to look after feet. For me, I really do think that that in its-self makes this book worth a read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite to the Pointe, 14 Jan 2008
Disappointed in this book. It is a very good reference book for people who need detailed knowledge of all the different types of shoes available - probably shops selling them in truth. It has some good information for the dancer but it is well hidden in lengthy paragraphs and chapters and there are very few helpful pictures or diagrams. I would have welcomed some more illustrations even if purely factual in nature to break up the text a bit. Rather dry to read and more like a manual than a book. Have not tried the exercises yet they may be wonderful!

I really wanted to like this book as I have resisted buying it for a long time due to expense and then went for it and am rather disappointed.

A bit unsatisfying.
