Book Description

Chief Petty Officer James "Patches" Watson was there at the start. One of the first to come out of the famed Underwater Demolition Team 21, he was an initial member -- a "plank owner" -- of America's deadliest and most elite fighting force, the U.S. Navy SEALs.

Through three tours in the jungle hell of Vietnam, he walked the point -- staying alert to trip wires, booby traps and punji pits, guiding his squad of amphibious fighters on missions of rescue, reconnaissance and demolition -- confronting a war's unique terrors head-on, unprotected . . . and unafraid.

This is the story of a hero told from the heart and from the gut -- an authentic tour of duty with one of the most legendary commandoes of the Vietnam War.

Written in much the same style as the Richard Marcinko biography Rogue Warrior, Point Man takes the reader through UDT training, the founding of seal team two and three tours of vietnam. The similarity of the stories told in this book to those in Marcinko's Rogue Warrior only confirm their authenticity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cameron Mckinney 22 Aug. 1999

What a book! When I picked it up I couldn't put it down. It's a masterpiece of military literature . This book is a must for anyone interested in the US Navy SEALs/UDTs. Watson gives a first hand account of busting into a hooch of gooks, not noing what to expect. And being penned down by enemy fire. He describes it so well I felt like I was down in the mud and muck right beside him. And since I am an aspireing SEAL myself, and in two years I'll be going through the training. I find this book to be amoung my favorites. HOOYAH Master Chief Watson!

3.0 out of 5 stars an OK book 15 Jun. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
nicely written really, a lot of the usual back slapping and bragging as you would expect from a SEAL,
lacking in actual action though (joking aside, he was that good most of his ops went by the book and hardly a shot was fired!)- great ...but not so for the reader!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent memoir of former SEAL 27 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book charts the personal involvement of James Watson in the evolution of US special forces known as SEAL's, from genesis to early active deployment in Vietnam. The authors part in this story is told in a positive tone that contrasts with many other Vietnam era memories. Well worth reading, especially as it counters the negativity that surrounds so many other accounts from this conflict.

I have read Pointman and Walking Point and find them both excellent reading. I lived in Norfolk for many years, born and raised in Portsmouth, Va. I had the pleasure of knowing Chief Watson, because his ex-wife is a friend of mine. I could relate to so many things talked about in both books, being from that area. I think the whole book was very true to life and well written.B

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Non Fiction Account of SEAL Missions 23 April 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I read "Point Man" and "Walking Point" with great interest. I have looked at quite a lot of SEAL literature, and find that these two books stand out above all the rest of the genre. You wanna know about SEALS? Read about the Chief himself in Point Man and Walking Point!!! I have met the Man and am glad to report he is a REAL DEAL SEAL! He also wrote 3 works of SEAL fiction that will keep your adrenaline pumping from page to page! (Top Secret series 1-3, and a 4th being developed for July 99) Good going, Chief "Patches" Watson!!
