Amazon.co.uk Review

A rash of daring bank robberies erupt in which the bad guys all wear the masks of worse guys--former presidents (nice touch). Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), an impossibly named former football star who blew out his knee and became a studly crime-busting fed instead, figures out that none of the heists occur during surfing season and all of them occur when, so to speak, surf's down. So obviously, he reasons, we're dealing with some surfer-dude bank robbers. He goes undercover with just such a group, led by a very spiritual, very guru-type guy played by Patrick Swayze, who has some muddled philosophies when it comes to materialism. If you can buy all that, this efficiently directed (by Kathryn Bigelow) action flick has some diverting moments (credit it, for example, for anticipating the extreme-sports fad). But Reeves' intelligent-sounding lines don't make him seem remotely intelligent and that plot makes him look positively brilliant. --David Kronke

Efficiently directed by Kathryn Bigelow and featuring some diverting action scenes, 1991's Point Break can be credited with anticipating the extreme-sports fad. A rash of daring bank robberies erupt in which the bad guys all wear the masks of worse guys--former presidents (nice touch). Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), an impossibly named former football star who blew out his knee and became a crime-busting federal agent instead, figures out that none of the heists occur during surfing season and all of them occur when, so to speak, surf's down. 3.0 out of 5 stars Point Break Blu-Ray, 20 Sep 2011

Mr. D. J. Heath "Lord Heath" (London, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is for the Blu-Ray release of the film, not the film itsself:

The transfer is 'ok'. There is quite a bit of grain and fuzzyness on the picture, but it's a marginal step up from the DVD print.

The extras, albeit minimal, do include some recent (2006) documentaries which feature Patrick Swayze commenting on how much fun he had making the movie. New interviews with a small handful of cast including Gary Busey and John C. McGinley, as well as an older interview with Keanu Reeves provide some insight into the making of the film. A handful of deleted scenes make up the extra running time, though they are poorly presented and bearly watchable.

The film was originally rated 18, but has been downgraded here for this release to 15.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb., 18 Mar 2003
This review is from: Point Break [DVD] (DVD)
This film is amazing, right from the very start when you the opening title music you know its going to be something special. I have watched this film more times than I care to remember, it truely is superb. It may have some 'well-used' plots but all of this is woven into a masterpeice of a film thats worth going in anyones collection, especially if your under 25, and into an alternative life style, you know who you are you adrenalin junkies!

5.0 out of 5 stars you'll watch it more than once, 7 Aug 2006

The film is wonderful and is without doubt the most re-watchable piece of dvd magic i have ever encountered. Yes, Keanu's acting is complete pants. Yes, there are many other aspects of this film (such as the unbelievable plot)which could put a prospective viewer off the film. This film was directed with extreme skill and this alone transformed what must have been a ridiculously off-putting script (the a list actors like swayze must have been talked into appearing in this one by some guy who could sell sand to the arabs) into a fantastic action movie. One extra point i have to make is that i have never fallen in love with a character before, and ive watched a lot of movies. Lori Petty plays a wonderful part in this film and is utterly adorable. Whether this is down to the production team or down to the actress alone is open to debate, but i am in love with this character (however sad this may sound). I was very sad to see her as some crazy, messed up in the head designer now. If i was 15 years younger and around california in 1991... ahhhh what might have been...
