If you suspend belief for 80 minutes, this is an OK film, nothing more; nothing less. Reviewers who have commented that this French production is a breath of fresh air compared to "flashy" Hollywood thrillers must have watched a different film - this is every bit as "flashy" as a Hollywood production.

Although fast-paced and well acted, the plot stretches credibility on more than a few occasions and this spoils what could otherwise have been a very good action thriller. Had it been 30 minutes longer, I feel that the director could have made a more believable and ultimately more enjoyable film. As it is, everything is just too rushed and, plot wise, extremely convenient.

The director's earlier film, 'Anything for Her', is far superior to this effort and was remade by Hollywood. I doubt very much that there will be a Hollywood remake of this - the director's already done the job for them.

'Point Blank (French: À Bout Portant)' is a French crime-thriller film that released in 2010 to positive reviews, however flopped at the box-office. The movie has found some success on the DVD front though.

The story revolves around a nurse, Samuel Pierret (Gilles Lellouche) whose wife (Elena Anaya) gets kidnapped after he saves the life of a criminal.

The movie in short is a fast paced thriller from start to finish. It's not groundbreaking but works due to strong performances, good action and enough twists that are attention grabbing. The feature is straight forward/predictable at times but due to the short and perfect duration (about 1 hour and twenty minutes), it's not that noticeable.

Gilles Lellouche is the back-bone of the film with a solid performance. His emotions as a frustrated husband trying to save his wife, are expressed in a fine manner on screen.

Fred Cavayé whose previous movie was the successful thriller 'Anything for Her' (Remade in America as 'The Next Three Days' starring Russell Crowe) comes up with an entertainer, which is tight in content and likeable.

'À Bout Portant' is short and sweet.

Straight to the Point 14 Feb 2012
By Sam
Format:Blu-ray
The French and their thrillers are going through somewhat of a boom period at the moment, to the extent that I am becoming confident that if it has an everyman running around shouting in French it's going to be pretty good. `Point Blank' is better than pretty good and is a prime example of how France is producing the kind of edge of your seat thriller that has not been seen in Hollywood since the 70s.

Sam is a nurse who happens to be working the wrong shift when career criminal Hugo is brought in. Hugo's allies want him out of bed and his enemies want him dead; one of these two groups chooses to blackmail Sam to aid them. How can you blackmail a straight laced member of the community like Sam? You kidnap his heavily pregnant wife and threaten to murder her. With this basic premise you have the `Death Wish'/'Taken' style explosive motivation for your lead. What would you do to keep your wife and unborn child safe? I know that I would act in a similar way to Sam and even more so.

`Point Break' is a film that speeds along like a juggernaut never giving you time to ponder some of the stranger elements of the script. Gilles Lellouche is excellent as the lead, a little soft and slubby, but a man who loves his family. The bad guys are just the right balance of evil, but still believable - every fibre in your body wants to see them get their comeuppance. Director Fred Cavaye does a brilliant job of making the film feel fresh even though it is essentially a series of stand offs and chances. With a lean running time of less than 90 minutes this is one film that grips you from start to finish and does not outstay its welcome. One of the best action thrillers of recent years.

I watched the BluRay version of the film and seeing as it is shot on slightly grainy cameras in inner city France this is not a necessity. The subtitles are clear and as this is an action film the dialogue is at a minimum. One extra on the disc that is worth watching is the making off. Director Cavaye is a dynamic man and he is not above rattling the cages of the cast and crew. Showing this on a making of is very brave and perhaps explains why the film has so much energy.
