A must read for any Pogues fan. The author has spoken to all the major players in the story (with the glaring and notable exception of Cait O'Riordan) and produced a thorough and exhaustive history of the notorious band. Indeed the one major criticism I'd have is that the author could have been a bit more selective in which quotes and interview excerpts to include. Also the latter days of the band are dealt with in a very short space of time. Nevertheless a laudable book and engagingly written. Indispensible if, like me, you're a fan.

At long last a biog that can do justice to one of the most unique rock n' roll bands ever. Huge amount of early history, amazing and interesting interviews and anecdotes which are straight from the horse's mouth(s). My only criticism would be that the latter years (1989 onward) are covered in around half as much detail as the "glory years". Nonetheless, a bookshelf essential for any serious follower of the cause.

This is a nice piece of work that most Pogues fans will enjoy. Still, like most things written about the band it avoids the elephant in the room. We'd have never heard of the Pogues if not for Shane MacGowan. It attempts to treat each Pogue equally, but some Pogues are more equal than others. While it's true the Pogues were more than MacGowan's backing band, MacGowan was infinately more than the Pogues frontman. His genius is inadequately covered.
