Walt Kelly plainly had the right idea about the once prevalent but now almost extinct premium programs based on savings stamps: For the most part, you weren't going to get much in return for your participation. Since the whole point seemed to be about saving the stamps, not redeeming them, why not just negate the latter and save everyone a lot of trouble? Thus "The Pogo Puce Stamp Catalog", a compendium of all the marvelous things you won't get for your books of stamps, which even conveniently lists the number of books of stamps that won't get them for you.
There are also some Pogo daily comics strips collated to tell the tale of the Puce Stamp program, how it came to be, why it came to be, and why it can be completely disregarded from the outset. Now that's service!
