Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

London's DJ Pogo holds the distinction of having compiled the first official (ie legal) compilation of old funk cuts plundered by dance and hip hop for their breakbeats with 1988's The Breaks. Block Party Breaks Vol 2 is his third breakbeat compilation and comes into a market saturated with LPs locating great, lost beats and samples. The appeal of these LPs (apart from their practical value to musicians) is both hearing familiar rhythms in original contexts (jungle's staple Amen break is featured on The Winston's "Amen Brother") and discovering absurdly obscure, long-forgotten funk workouts. Tracks by Dave Cortez & The Moon People, Magic Disco Machine and Juice haven't been commercially available since the 1970 s and sound like they've been hiding on imaginary blaxploitation and porn (especially Sesso Matto's moan-laded "Sesso Matto") soundtracks. Most cuts are raw funk (JB's horns, psychedelic guitar solos, dirty bass, wild drums) although Pogo looks to rock for Gong's "Esnuria" and Jeff Beck's howling "Come Dancing". Great for DJs/producers but also fab for anyone else who likes intensely gritty and excitable funk - Tony Marcus

At last a superb piece of vinyl that cuts all the rubbish and gets down with the real business. Pogo has included some real gems here, with the highlight for me being Amen Brother by the Winstons, the source of THAT drum break. If you were ever into 80's hip hop or especially D&B/jungle since it's conception then believe me you know the one! Also to be found is the superb Happy Soul by Dave Cortez with it's infectious Hammond riffs & tight drums and Sammy Gordon's Upstairs On Boston Road which always raises a smile of pleasure. Catch a Groove by Juice is another classic with its heavily caned break and nice to see Scratchin' by MDM in there for good measure. A real bonus is the sleeve notes on each track which give really interesting history and info (example- G.C Coleman was the Amen drummer, I didn't know that!) and gives you the background information to dig deeper if you're interested. I hope more albums such as this appear in the future because there's so many people out there who think these classic beats and riffs just appeared out of mid air or from a piece of kit in a studio. Not the case and this album goes a long way to highlighting the history and the raw musical talent that was around in the late 60's/early 70's. A permanent resident on my 1210s and top marks to DJ Pogo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Breaks 28 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Some historically important breaks are presented here in their original unadulterated form, sounding a lot crisper and beefier than my crackly vinyl.

5.0 out of 5 stars KILLER-Flat Out Killer Tracks! 27 Mar 2006
By KC - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you are a DJ - this is a basic CD you build your collection from. BUY IT TODAY! If you love KILLER 70's FUNK, you have to have this CD.

It's easy to be fooled by "library" discs that promise the moon and deliver three guys from Albania who think they know funk but this is the REAL THING.

There are ZERO weak tracks - every one is brilliant plus you have to own "Amen Brother," the foundation for hip hop music sampling!

Disc #2 is just as good!

It's easy to be fooled by "library" discs that promise the moon and deliver three guys from Albania who think they know funk but this is the REAL THING.

There are ZERO weak tracks - every one is brilliant! Not like a lot of other collections where the quality drops off after #1, this is great.

Disc #1 is just as good! It's also a MUST BUY as it has "Amen Brother," on it, the foundation for hip hop music sampling!
