Evelyn Chang has chosen a group of interesting pieces that sometimes invoke the misty and exotic. She dispatches the programme effortlessly, opening the gates for emergence of their rich inner poetry. Downloading is such an easy way to be assured of this. I'd recommend sampling a few from the 30-36 group & a few from the 37-41 cluster just to hear her sail along with full poetic rudder and in superlative sound. Then go all the way.
I return to this CD repeatedly for intelligent pianism that is well judged. Chang inhabits the music and is true to its intentions. She is well qualified for these pieces and doesn't strain for effects. The first 24 tracks are Scriabin's Preludes. The remaining 18 tracks (42 in all, comprising a total of 72" playing time) contain music composed by Ma Shui-Long (b. 1939 - "Sketch of the Rainy Harbor") + Tabakova (b. 1980) + Desyatnikov (b. 1955, music from the film "Evenings Near Moscow"). When the score calls for it, she really does supply touches of the misty and exotic. This is an honest performance that gives lasting admiration and pleasure.
Downloads are available for sampling and purchase. Again, tracks 30-41 are best bets for sampling, as these are her special choices of unfamiliar music for which she has a special affinity.
