Product Description

Synopsis

"Poetry, Therapy and Emotional Life" explores the thoughts of poets, therapists and counsellors in relation to the human condition with a practical component on how poetry can be used in therapeutic work. Concentrating on the theories of Freud, Jung, Rogers, Berne, Perls and Ellis, the book examines topics such as human motivation, experience and neurosis. It encourages readers to take a fresh and enthusiastic approach to their work as counsellors, therapists or writers, and will appeal to anyone with a love of poetry or writing as a means of self expression. The text contains a wealth of poetic examples both traditional and modern, along with samples from clients in creative writing groups, schools and healthcare settings. Psychological therapists and counsellors, health and social care workers, and writers will find this very accessible book invaluable.

From the Author

'I specifically attempt to explore the strong inter-relatedness between poetry and psychological ideas. It is a powerful medium in which to express complex feelings and ideas. Counselling and psychotherapy base their approaches in various psychological theories but in their practice seek imaginative and creative ways to work with people experiencing emotional upsets in their lives. Both areas seek to illuminate the human condition, explain and describe issues such as love and loss, spirituality, and transitions in life.'
Diana Hedges

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry Therapy, 3 Jan 2011

This review is from: Poetry, Therapy and Emotional Life (Paperback)
I would recomend this book to anyone interested in poetry and therapy especially if you are new to therapy as it gives a gentle introduction to different approaches to therapy and where they might link to poetry. I was originally interested in writing poetry for healing but the book gives a useful insight into poems that can be read for healing. For example, I like the first poem inparticular, it is by William Blake, it is called ' A Poison Tree' I think this poem illustrates how pent up emotion can be harmful to the psyche. it is similar to bibliotherapy but with poems, rather than a whole novel. My copy of this book has dissapeared but I shall be purchasing another copy soon..
