Product Description

Product Description

The Cadence Records label was founded in December 1952 in New York by arranger and bandleader Archie Bleyer, musical director for American radio and television personality Arthur Godfrey. The label was initially conceived as a vehicle to promote the career of Julius La Rosa, a resident singer on the Arthur Godfrey Show. Cadence Records shut its doors in 1964, a victim of the British invasion - but, as this compilation makes clear, the label represents an important slice of pop history at the quality end of the musical spectrum.

5.0 out of 5 stars Track Listings -I'm Never Gonna Kiss You 10 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD
This two Cd set `Poetry In Motion'
ORIGINAL RECORDINGS by the original artists.

The title poetry in motion has caused some confusion with other reviewers.

The title is from one of the better know singles 'Poetry In Motion'sung by the great Johnny Tillotson.
Incidentally my title is culled from two of the singles on this CD set.

It's just my way of singling (!) out my reviews from other reviewers.
Incidentally I don't regard this as a proper review in any sense it's just an aim to help people like me to see more clearly what's on the sets!

At this low low price at under a fiver means the cost is less than a modern day single CD.
The simple reason for the low price? The recordings are over 50 years old and may be `Public Domain' in the USA.

The sad fact is the majority of artists here are long since deceased.
Maybe when you hear the tracks again you could possibly like me say a little prayer for them?

But it's hard to work out which tracks are on the CD Amazon seemed to have jumbled all the tracks in one long set of lines.

If you are like me and find it hard to see exactly which tracks are on the two CDs then this easy to read list may help?

CD 1

1. Poetry In Motion-Johnny Tillotson
2. Wake Up Little Susie-The Everly Brothers
3. I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door-Eddie Hodges
4. Butterfly-Andy Williams
5. Eddie My Love-The Chordettes
6. Go Baby Go-The Four Tophatters
7. Rumble-Link Wray & His Ray Men
8. Cherry Berry Wine-Charlie McCoy
9. Without You-Johnny Tillotson
10. The Ballad Of Davy Crockett-Bill Hayes
11. A Taste Of Honey-Lenny Welch

5.0 out of 5 stars CADENCE STOREY 2 May 2013
By Billy
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Really liked this one. Excellent value for money. A very comprehensive look into Cadence's vaults from the 50's to the early 60's.
I never knew they produced so many records and all tracks good quality. I discovered the Don Shirley Trio for the first time with their two offerings of jazz instramentals, great stuff. All tracks varied from pop, country, the two jazz tracks and MOR; some artists well known and some long forgotten. All musically good and well recorded. In my opinion was one of New York' s finest labels.

To One Day Music, how about an exploration of the Kapp label?.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cadence Records Story 1954 to 1962 10 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD
Another welcome retrospective from One Day Music of 50 tracks dating from 1954 to 1962 originally released by Cadence (the original record numbers are quoted on the back listing).
This label was set up to release recordings by Julius La Rosa (still active today) and went on to be the first label of Andy Williams and provided him with chart success.
This set has many artists and in the approx 124 minutes running time provides a real feel of both the music of the label and of the era 1954 to 1962.
CD1 has more tracks from 1958 & 1960. CD2 has more tracks from 1957 & 1962. the label continued until at least 1964.
The collection opens with Johnny Tillotson singing Poetry in Motion and that was a 1961 number 2 in the USA & number 1 in the UK charts.
The Everly Brothers also did well on Cadence and had a 1957 number 1 in the USA and number 2 in the UK with Wake Up Little Susie.
Lenny Welch recorded the first vocal version of A Taste of Honey in 1962. Records label producer Archie Bleyer himself had a hit with Hernando's Hideaway. Teen star Jean Thomas recorded Moon River in 1962 and made a good job of it too CD2/16.
Eddie Hodges was signed to the label at 14 and had success with amongst others I'm Gonna Knock on Your Door.
Andy Williams did very well and stayed with the label until 1961 having scored a number of hits and these are featured too.
Archie Bleyer had an eye for the market and adapted his approach and group of stars accordingly which gave the label a good run and it is believed that only the invasion of Brit pop caused the operation to fold. However having just listened to over 2 hours of nostalgic sounds that bridge 1960 I would say that Archie Bleyer was a good judge of what music the public would buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wake Up Little Susie, Wake Up!!! 10 Aug 2014
Format:Audio CD
All the Cadence releases in one collection! The early Everly Brothers before moving on to Warner, Johnny Tillotson, Link Wray (among the greatest guitarists of all-time) and other acts on the pop charts (Andy Williams, Chordettes..etc).

Check out Lenny Welch; early Soul which even the Beatles took notice. In fact, the fab 4 recorded his original "A Taste Of Honey" featured here and "You Don't Own Me" a very underrated track in its day.

There are some good instrumentals here as well and some jazz. All in all, a good compilation for collectors of this era of music.
