Product Description

Sometimes it seems like there are as many definitions of poetry as there are poems. Coleridge defined poetry as “the best words in the best order.” St. Augustine called it “the Devil’s wine.” For Shelley, poetry was “the record of the best and happiest moments of the happiest and best minds.” But no matter how you define it, poetry has exercised a hold upon the hearts and minds of people for more than five millennia. That’s because for the attentive reader, poetry has the power to send chills shooting down the spine and lightning bolts flashing in the brain — to throw open the doors of perception and hone our sensibilities to a scalpel’s edge.

Poetry For Dummies is a great guide to reading and writing poems, not only for beginners, but for anyone interested in verse.  From Homer to Basho, Chaucer to Rumi, Shelley to Ginsberg, it introduces you to poetry’s greatest practitioners. It arms you with the tools you need to understand and appreciate poetry in all its forms, and to explore your own talent as a poet. Discover how to:

  • Understand poetic language and forms
  • Interpret poems
  • Get a handle on poetry through the ages
  • Find poetry readings near you
  • Write your own poems
  • Shop your work around to publishers

Don’t know the difference between an iamb and a trochee? Worry not, this friendly guide demystifies the jargon, and it covers a lot more ground besides, including:

  • Getting published

I bought this book for my poetry exam that I had to retake due to a bad grade. It helped me a LOT!!! The title '... for Dummies' will put off a lot of people from buying it because they think it'll mean they're dumb and so have to resort to purchasing a book for 'actual' dummies but that is far from the truth. Poetry For Dummies simplifies poetry in so many great ways and avoids all the technical jargon most books, revision texts and even teachers use.

I recommend this to anyone and everyone. Its for all ages. It's too bad schools don't use these books in their English or poetry classes. This book also is a manual to writing poetry.

Please do buy this and see for yourself. I'm not so sure about the rest of the '...For Dummies' books but coming from me, an A Level English Literature Student who needs all the help she can get, its amazingly helpful.

Oh and I also improved my grade with this :D

Don't be put off by rather unappealing cover design, this is a very good book. It has increased my enjoyment of poetry enormously.

Clear, entertaining and thorough explanations, provides lots of recommendations on other texts - both poems and criticism - that otherwise I'd never know about, excellent brief history of poetry from year dot and encouragement/advise for potential poets.

All-in-all a complete delight.

This book is good. It is well set out and takes the reader systematically through the major points on poetry. It combines a general introduction to the subject with some quite thoughtful analysis of individual poems, and manages all this in a simple but not patronising style. A good general introduction.
