Robert Browning (1812-89) was perhaps the most prolific and most versatile English poet of the nineteenth century; and this memorable recording by James Mason offers a generous selection from Browning's work, ranging in style from the shorter lyrical poems to the vivid characterisations and perceptive insights of the dramatic monologues, three of which are included here in their entirety.
• My Last Duchess
• 'How They Brought the Good News from Ghent to Aix'
• 'Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came'
• Soliloquy of the Spanish Cloister
• Home-Thoughts, from Abroad
• The Lost Leader
• Porphyria's Lover
• Memorabilia
• Rabbi Ben Ezra
• 'The year's at the spring'
• The Bishop Orders His Tomb
• Andrea del Sarto
• Fra Lippo Lippi

This review is from: The Poetry of Browning: Complete & Unabridged (Audio Cassette)
Robert Browning had the power to touch the heart of his readers during his life.A carefully chosen selection of his poemsare presented here.Through his eyes we see his characters beautifully portrayed. The serene picture of The Duchess, followed by the Ghent to Aix ride with it`s galloping rythms.Ccilde Roland making his journey next, over the harsh black plain to the Tower.Brother Laurance, with his sarcastic sing-song outlook on the outside world,is followed by `Home Thoughts`with it`s `First fine careless rapture`All the shorter poems are lyrical and thought-provoking.The monologues are superb.Del Sarto`s soliloquy on his married state, aaaaand Fra Lippocomes to life as we listen to his lifestory. These poems are relevant to Everyman on Life`s way with the contemplation on the`Life to come`. This reader is the ideal choiceto deliver these poems. He creates pictures in the mind thatBrowning would have commended. The works are memorable on the page, but breathtakingly beautiful while listening to the sensitive speaking voice of James Mason.
