Product Description

Review

'This collection of the latest batch is pure delight. The poems are a challenging mixture... Old friends come up as fresh as dasies in this context, alongside the foreign, the obscure and the plain puzzling. And they are even better read in an armchair.' (THE TIMES )

Product Description

Twenty years ago, two British poets, Gerard Benson and Cicely Herbert, and an American novelist and academic resident in London, Judith Chernaik, had the stunningly simple idea of displaying poetry in the otherwise unsold ad spaces on the Tube cars to bring the art of language and emotion to the travelling public, no strings attached, no previous experience required. It was immediately successful, and the public took to poetry released - perhaps for the first time - from the inhibitions of its academic straightjacket. The changing display of poems, five or so every four months, all beautifully presented on white landscape posters, was soon a fixed part of the London scene, and with it began a whole new public interest in poetry. The first anthology of Poems on the Underground appeared in 1991; this new collection continues the anthology still further, into 2006, and is an extended version of last year's New Poems on the Underground, which took the collection to the end of 2004. The new poems will include work by David Constantine, Thomas Hardy, Richard Lovelace ('Stone walls do not a prison make') and numerous others not yet selected. As always, some will be old, some new, some will be from American or Commonwealth writers, but all will celebrate the infinite beauty of the English language.

5.0 out of 5 stars Range and brevity - a great `way in' to poetry for those in a hurry, 4 Dec 2007

I love the collections of `Poems on the Underground' that have been appearing at intervals in recent years. This edition, containing some 90 poems, is not as richly varied as some earlier editions, but still contains some gems, like Rita Dove's 'Notes from a Tunisian Journal', for example, a lovely, almost `photographic' series of observed images from a holiday. There are some fine poems from new writers, too - I'd single out Rebecca Hawkes' 'Stitching the Bayeux Tapestry' here - as well as an excellent selection from European poets, with accompanying English translation. Given its range, and the brevity of the works featured, this has to be one of the best recent collections there is for introducing the reluctant and unpersuaded to the delights of poetry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poems on the underground (2006), 4 Jun 2011
This review is from: New Poems on the Underground 2006 (Paperback)
If you are on the fence when it comes to poetry, then these might be the anthologies to try for you. I have read a few of these (in this series), my favourate so far is the seventh edition. There are a few poems I like in this one. In each of these books they take poems from all types and of different times. A real true selection of poetry. Even though I like poetry myself, I find some poetry books just not for me. For example, I like some Wilfred Owen poems, but that doesnt mean I like them all. Anthologies dont always give you a chance to take a look at different styles. Some anthologies will concentrate on a particular style. Thats where for me these ones work well. Every one I have read, there are poems I like and those I dont. This is refreshing, and works because there are always poems you will like. So if you want an antholgy of poetry, this would be my choice.
