Product Description

Product Description

As more and more secular funerals are taking place, there is a need for appropriate texts. The Poet Laureate spoke recently of the importance of 'epitaphs' for people: poems or songs which commemorate their lives. Actress Julia Watson, married to the poet David Harsent, was confronted with the issue when her father died, and the result is this inspiring collection of 70 poems and prose extracts suitable for reading at funerals and celebrations of a life. The selections range from Shakespeare to Chief Tecumseh of the Shawnee Nation, from Christina Rossetti to St Francis of Assissi, and included are some very short pieces which could be printed on an order of service.

About the Author

Julia Watson was born in south Wales, and read English and Drama at Exeter University. She plays Dr Baz in Casualty, a series she has worked in since the beginning. She is married to the poet David Harsent, and they live with their daughter in Barnes, south-west London.

I am a Vicar who takes lots of funerals and I take this book out with me on my bereavement calls in order to help the bereaved choose something that means a lot to them for the actual service.

As the title suggests, this book is a wonderful help for any Celebrant or Humanist in any country and it has already helped me and saved me lots of time trying to find the right words at ceremonies. I am a busy Celebrant here in Melbourne, Australia and I have had comments from members of the Congregation about wanting to get copies of the various verses I say during the respective services. Highly recommend to anyone who needs a quick but very good reference.

This book is going to be really useful with some very appropriate readings for funerals but how can a Ronnie Barker fan read a poem at a funeral called "Four Candles"? (page 40)
Really!!!
