Sea Fever 25 July 2004
By annesailorgirl - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This book holds some of the best-loved ocean and water poems of all time, including all 3 verses of my absolute favorite poem by John Masefield, Sea Fever.

Oh I must go down to the seas again,

to the lonely sea and the sky,

And all I ask is a tall ship

and a star to steer her by

And the wheel's kick and the wind's song,

and the white sail's shaking

And a grey mist on the sea's face

and a grey dawn breaking . . .

The book's main sections are:

Sea Fever,

The Call of the Deep

Storm and Call

Ballads

Songs and Chanteys

Anthem Prayer and Hymn

Seafarers

Wrecks at Sea

Legends

Above and Beyond

Reading the Waves.

Authors include of course John Masefield, but also Robert Frost, Tennyson, Emily Dickinson, TS Eliot, DH Lawrence, John Milton, John Keats, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Edgar Allan Poe, and Percy Shelley. There are also anonymous poems including Trafalgar, Davey Jones's Locker, Blow the Man Down, and Drunken Sailor.

If you love the water and if you love books, you will love this little volume of poems.

A fantastic collection of poetry for anyone who loves poems about the sea. 4 Dec 2014

I have been a lover of good poetry most of my life. As a former U.S. Navy Veteran I have also loved poems about the sea. When I saw this book being sold at a bargain price I just had to have it. Poems of the Sea: selected and edited by J.D. McClatchy is a wonderful 251 page hardcover volume. It has a collection of unique and beautiful poetry from a wide range of poets around the world.

This book is organized into 11 areas and they are as follows: Sea-Fever, the call of the deep, storm and calm, ballads, songs and chanteys, anthem, prayer, hymn, seafarers, wrecks at sea, legends, above and beyond, and reading the waves. The list of poets include many of the most esteemed and respected writers of all time, as well as some lesser known poets. A few of the many poets in this collection include Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Keats, Victor Hugo, Herman Melville, John Milton, William Shakespeare and Walt Whitman.

If you are a poetry lover this is a collection you should check out. A fantastic read for all poetry lovers.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

Poems of the Sea 3 Jan 2013

For those attracted to the water (salt, that is), this might be the right book of poetry for the library, or for the boat. This volume would fit quite nicely between those of maritime history and maybe some of marine painting!
