Celebrating 20 years of promoting contemporary poetry with the Forward Poetry Prize

Product Description

On National Poetry Day 2011 Poems of the Decade will be published, an anthology of the best poems submitted for the Forward Prizes during the last ten years, marking the 20th anniversary of the Forward Prizes this year.

The collection will feature works by celebrated poets including Simon Armitage, John Burnside, Wendy Cope, Carol Ann Duffy, Seamus Heaney, Jackie Kay, Gwyneth Lewis, Roger McGough, Andrew Motion, Sean O'Brien, Ruth Padel, Don Patterson, Peter Porter, Robin Robertson, Christopher Reid, Jo Shapcott and C K Williams.

The Forward Prizes were founded to provide a showcase for contemporary poetry, and this collection will highlight some of the best works from the last ten years, as chosen at the time by a prestigious range of judges including poets, literary writers, authors, actors and musicians.

By Barry B
I'm not a regular reader of modern poetry, maybe that's why I am unmoved by most of this. There are 2 or 3 poems with some clever prose, but most of this reeks of the vacant luxury of free time complacently indulged in by the mildly tormented pose of a poet required to come up with product - the torture; let me write about mowing the lawn or standing at the bus stop. It's all so laboured. It lacks the writings of individuals inspired by experience to grasp the moment and give expression to that experience. It reeks of middle class leisure time and Radio 4. The exception is John Burnside. I've never been sure about his writing before. But, reading it in this collection I was convinced - and moved, emotionally and intellectually. At least these collections allow you to see who stands out. But, as for most of it - there is more profundity and humanity and less conceit in the lyrics of most commercial pop songs.
