Okay, we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, right? Well, I do, anyway! And I really like this one!
The cover is glossy, padded, and is beautifully illustrated. The color of the spine and back cover match the adobe orange part of the steps on the front cover. There is an adorable English proverb on the back cover.
I really like the book itself, too! It's heavy for its compact size owing to thick satiny pages covered in pictures of beautiful art and lacy illustrations.
The "Occasions" covered by the poems in this book include: Christenings, Graduations, Anniversaries, Burns Night (all by Robert Burns), Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Easter, Christmas, and funerals. I suppose the book would have been too thick if it also included Congratulations, Encouragement, and Illness?
Thanks to the Fine Arts Photographic Library there are so many beautiful pictures to look at throughout the book. It's almost a study in art as well as a collection of poetry!
I counted 124 poems (or snippets from longer verse) in total. Some are very short poems and others span four pages. All are followed by the name of the poet and the poet's DOB-DOD. All poets, with three exceptions that I noticed (i.e. Shakespeare), were born mid 1700s to late 1800s.
Give it as a gift or keep it for yourself, I recommend this book of "Poems for all Occasions" to all readers!
