5.0 out of 5 stars this is a perfect anthology. 12 April 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
If you love poetry, or if it has never meant a thing to you, either way there will be something in this anthology that will brighten your days. poets ranging from medieval "anon" to the present day; poems from afew lines to 2 or 3 pages; funny poems, thoughtful poems, poignant poems -- they are all here, and more besides. Arranged to match the calendar, each day becomes a delight. there is also background information on the poet and/or the circumstances of the poem's composition, plus notes of other key events which took place on that day. It's my favourite anthology, I find myself dipping into it all the time -- and somehow, whatever my mood , I can find a poem to suit. It's wonderful, I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to poetry 3 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a fantastic introduction to many poets that you should be aware of but are probably not - a great place to get acquainted.

The anecdotes, anniversaries etc add to the understanding of many of the poems. I recommend this collection to people like me who lack a history with poetry but are curious about the medium. The 'poem a day' concept allows the unfamiliar reader to slowly learn to appreciate poetry for what it is - something to be enjoyed and savored.

I strongly recommend this book for those that want five minutes of calm at the beginning or end of the day!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Compilation for Every Day of the Year ! 12 April 2000
Format:Paperback
What a marvellous idea ! A different poem for every day of the year. All the classic poets are here, along with a number of lesser known, but no less effective poets. Somehow you can always find a poem to match your mood.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poem Selection
I wasn't that struck by the selection of poems in this, possibly because I prefer rhyming poetry. The information and background given on each page was very interesting though.
