Used this when travelling in the Okavango Delta, Etosha and Chobe. Extremely useful and practical, with colour photos of all the birds, a map showing which parts of Southern Africa they can be found in, info on mating habits, living habits, social habits. Most importantly its small and compact so easy to carry around with you when you are walking etc Buy it!

Can't believe that spiderboy could expect that a 'pocket guide' that has a over 400 birds listed could have multiple views of these species. I took this book through South Africa and Botswana and I am happy to recommended it to all. With the camera equipment I carry it is essential that I keep books to a minimum. Whilst lugging a huge reference guide around Africa may have allowed me to identify more birds. Finding them amongst the 1000+ birds in 600 pages in complete guides is time consuming and often difficult. Searching books also distracts me from searching for the real thing! I have a guide to birds of east Africa that I referred to on return to Australia from Tanzania and still needed to ask for help on the web for birds of prey and others that I have razor sharp photos of. The pocket guide was quick light and had the vast majority of birds I searched for. Great little book!

It's a big ask to provide a book that is pocket-sized, yet covers the common birds of South Africa. Flicking through the book in the field, I found this less than comprehensive and about as useful as a chocolate tea spoon. Most annoying was that the book only provided one photo of the common birds of prey - and that was always a perched bird! As any birder knows, birds of prey are typically seen through bins high up in the air, making it impossible to identify even the largest and most conspicuous vultures using the information provided in this book. Spend more money and get a decent field guide.

Great little book 8 Nov 2012
By Jason Morton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
My wife and I travelled to the Cape region of South Africa, and when I mentioned to our tour guide that I was interested in birds he brought this book along for me to borrow. While not a comprehensive guide, quite frankly this book will satisfy the needs of any casual birder - it focuses on the birds one is actually likely to see, so you don't spend time paging through and being confused by all of the rare and vagrant species that a full guide would list. Indeed, after a week of touring and photography through the Garden Route, out of 65 species seen I couldn't ID 3 from this book (and one of those cases involved a fledgling).

Birds of Southern Africa is arranged quite well; and gives useful information such as whether a particular bird is more likely to be seen alone, in pairs, family groups, or flocks. I also found that the inclusion of the Afrikaans names was useful, since our tour guide knew many of the birds by the Afrikaans and not the English. There is a lack of Latin binomials, though, which would have been nice.

My only real complaint is with the raptors: they are pictured perched, rather than in flight. This decision quite frankly baffles me, since these birds are of course usually seen as they soar above, and I was thereby frustrated on more than one attempt at identification.

In summary: as a tourist with a healthy interest in birding, I found this guide to be a very good fit for my needs.

For such a little book, it is packed with information: range maps, good photographs, and tips. We look forward to using it next week, along with the new Fourth Edition of the Birds of Southern Africa by Ian Sinclair which is due to arrive tomorrow.

I used this book extensively on my trip to South Africa. It is simple to use, contains colored photos of most of the birds of the area, and was with me the entire trip.
