5.0 out of 5 stars Great international summary of the important - and the trivial!, 8 Nov 2008
By Mr. Nicholas Dougan "Nick" (Kent, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
136 pages provide two page statistics on 66 countries, plus the Euro Area and the world as a whole, plus 90 pages devoted to "world rankings" under an enormous variety of headings. There are things that you might expect, like population, land area and life expectancy, and some that you might not, like teenagers' behaviour, air pollution and clean energy use. It's a useful reference book that doesn't take up too much space on your bookshelf, but even more than that it's a great book to dip into.

Did you know, for example:

* That 11% of the world's land area is arable land, while in Britain its 24% - but in France 34%.

* That the longest road network is in the US, but the densest is in Macau, the most crowded Qatar, the most used Hong Kong - but that the most deaths (per 100,000) people are in South Africa.

* That while the US spends more on defence than any other country (indeed, more than most other countries put together) it is ranked 20th equal by % of GDP. Myanmar tops the % list - at a staggering 18.7% of GDP.

* Maltese girls are the most obese, while Maltese boys are pipped at the post by American boys. Maltese kids are also most likely to get involved in fights, while the English are ranked 13th equal.

If I have one complaint - and I do always try to have one - it is that while there is an extensive list of references at the end, the sources for each list are sometimes, but not always given. Apart from making it more difficult to enquire further, if you want, the fact that some sources are indicated makes me wonder quite how the data for the unlisted ones have been constructed.

This book may raise as many questions as it answers, but it's certainly well worth its £10.99 cover price - even more so with Amazon's discounts. (The Economist may still be offering its downloadable screensaver version, too.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but still can be better!!!, 3 Aug 2009
By F. J. A. Lopez (UNITED KINGDOM) - See all my reviews

This is a great mini-book but could be much better due to the lack of some details. Maybe, it could cost £5-10 more and comes with a CD or a membership in The Economist.
