Product Description

Product Description

Anyone wishing to learn more about pocket watches, therefore, whether as a collector or through a general interest in the subject, should find this authoritative title useful. Covering the period of 1850-1940, the authors cover in depth every type of pocket watch produced, explaining in clear, uncomplicated language precisely what to look out for and, of equal importance, what to avoid. Unlike so many other books on horology, they do not concern themselves with largely unobtainable or outrageously expensive "museum" examples but prefer to concentrate their attention on affordable watches which their readers are actually likely to come across in everyday situations. Illustrated throughout with hundreds of previously unpublished photographs, the authors provide not just portraits of watches but also numerous examples of their internal workings or movements. Nothing escapes their attention, from alarm to late verge, and the instruction and advice should commend itself to prospective purchasers and cataloguers everywhere.

Clearly this book only came as a result of immense research undertaken by the author, the final product of which can only be described as superb. For any serious collector of pocket watches this publication contains just about all you need to know about watches, and contains a wealth of informative text and beautiful images. It's painstaking attention to detail has helped me achieve a far greater understanding of Pocket Watches, their history, construction and collectibility. Great value for money and just about the best book that I've seen on this subject

As a Reference for Pocketwatches 23 Oct 2000
By Steven M. Parker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This volume is large and well illustrated with black and white photographs. It details the pocket watch from English Lever, fusee drive to late 20th century Swiss. The pictures and descriptions of watches are complete with text for movement, case, dial, hands, maker etc. Found a Swiss watch (Bellodes) made for the Turkish market in mid 1800's. It's one I own and couldn't find the history on until I read this book. This is an excellent reference book.

Nice coffee table book, but far from complete 19 Jan 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book based on the other two reviews - largely because I thought it was a fairly complete and useful reference. It actually only covers the subject superficially and only includes a very small percentage of the pocket watches made. Many classics are not mentioned at all. Very little information is provided on makers. As a picture book w/brief history and sampling of watches its okay but ... It's mostly a coffee table book rather than a thorough informative reference.

Very useful! 26 Sep 1998

Format:Hardcover
As a military horoligist, I think this book is very useful. It covers a number of pocket chronometers and military watches. There are a large number of photographs. This is an authoritative reference book at a great price!
