Product Description

French Language Studies

"Clearer typefaces and a more open page layout, with sub-headings set down, make for easier consultation, while navigation through the alphabetical listings is aided by the grey bars on the outside margin which provide a thumb-index effect ... practical, clear and easy to consult" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

Authoritative and up to date, this third edition of the Pocket Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary covers over 90,000 words and phrases, and 120,000 translations of contemporary French and English. The grammar supplement provides full information on all the key points of French and English grammar, including verb tables for quick reference, and a correspondence section gives example letters, emails, CVs, and new help with text messaging. Language is now studied in the context of its culture, so the existing culture section has been revised and expanded to offer lively and useful information on life in the French-speaking world - everything from political institutions to how weddings are celebrated. The Pocket Oxford-Hachette French Dictionary is the perfect reference for student and adult learners needing an affordable, portable dictionary.

Having now lived in France for just over one year and still needing to drastically improve my comprehension of the French language, I felt it would be useful to have a quality pocket dictionary to complement the large hard back version kept at home, thus allowing me to check the meaning of words as I came across them. Small travel guides are fine for most day to day activities, such as restaurant menu translation, travel related information etc. however you are forever coming across words that you don't understand or fully understand in their context. I have found this dictionary very comprehensive and invaluable as a translation aid, its provision of example word usage helps you to understand the different meanings and context within a sentence or phrase. In addition to its standard French to English and English to French translations, I also found it's sections on areas such as public holiday's, cultural information and letter writing advice very useful - an added bonus. My only two criticisms about the dictionary are one, its size and possibly its weight. The title "pocket .... dictionary" is perhaps a little misleading, it measurements are approximately 13 x 19.5 x 4.5cm and it weighs 0.75Kg, at touch too large to carry in one's pocket as you go about your daily business. In saying that it's fine for keeping in the car or carrying in a small day rucksack and perfect as a second dictionary for the office. Secondly, as a dictionary intended for "pocket" use, a version with a flexible binding as opposed to standard paper back would be perfect.

A word of warning, this book is not exactly a pocket edition. I've just received my copy today and it is huge. I was expecting a handy pocket dictionary, but instead it is a mighty 8" x 5" and 2" thick.

It may well be a great dictionary, but don't expect to carry it around in your pocket. Hence, 4 Stars for the misleading title.

I have no complaints with the content of this dictionary - the words are clearly defined and useful idioms appear at the end of the definitions. But it is far too big to be a pocket dictionary and the pages in mine are starting to fall out after a few months' use. This means that it is hardly a reference book to keep at home either. Very disappointing indeed and I would not have bought it had I known. I now own the Collins French Dictionary and Grammar (which I have also reviewed) and which has an excellent grammar/verb section with all you need for GCSE with easy-to-follow examples. This one is still in good shape after two years of intensive use.
