Product Description

Review

"Pocket Notebook stuns like a truncheon, grips like a pair of handcuffs, crackles with charge like a taser. Reading it is like being caught up in a riot: exhilarating, terrifying, and swept along by an unstoppable momentum. Either Mike Thomas has a fascinatingly jaundiced view of the Thin Blue Line, or we're all in big, big trouble."
--Niall Griffiths, author of Runt

Book Description

A darkly humorous tale of an out-of-control policeman experiencing a spectacular breakdown.

Written by a serving police officer, this really is the funniest and darkest book I have ever read. I love books which grab my attention in the first couple of pages and this book certainly does that, showing the mental disintegration of the protagonist PC Jacob Smith. His world slowly falls apart, and while he's not the most sympathetic of characters at the start of the novel, you certainly feel some sympathy for him by the end. And the writing is sharp, funny, pitch-black and in some places refreshingly un-PC - giving us a unique insight into the working lives of the modern day police 'farce'. This is thrilling, hilarious stuff and gripped me to the blood-spattered climax. Try it - you'll be hooked from the first few pages.

It's not often I pick up a book which I cannot put down - in fact, I have quite a short attention span - however I thoroughly enjoyed Pocket Notebook and found Jakes downward spiral fascinating. It's not the most comfortable book to read - I had that feeling I had whilst watching Borat - a little bit disturbed, completely enthralled and found myself laughing out loud, much to my husband's bemusement. The book gave an interesting insight into the police force, albeit from the thoughts and notes of an officer with deteriorating mental health. I also enjoyed the exploration of the complex and volatile relationships between Jake and his family, friends and colleagues, all culminating in a very exciting final chapter. I read in the Western Mail that this book has been nominated for Welsh book of the year, it definitely gets my vote.

Stunning debut
Loved this book, I found it hard to put down. The central character is an anti hero but I was drawn completely into his world and sensed the growing despair. Truly great.

Already been done
Although a reasonably entertaining story, it's almost a carbon copy of "Filth" by Irvine Welsh. In fact I'm surprised Welsh's publisher didn't sue for plagiarism. Read more

A 'Show Don't Tell' Masterpiece

Pocket Notebook is essentially a tragedy and, like most tragic heroes, Jacob lacks the insight and foresight to predict his own downfall. Read more

Amusing yet Disturbing, couldn't put it down.
A dark story told with wit & inteligence. Thought provoking. I await the next Mike Thomas Novel.
