Wow, I bought this book because it was recommended to me by a well respected source and I LOVED IT.

I am a graduate of a Musical Theatre College and found this book helpful, interesting and factual.

In the business that I am in, I am so happy to have a book where I can refer to should I need to with regards to all Musicals, past and present.

The backround written about the most influencial composers of Musical Theatre are fascinating and insightful. Little quirky facts make the book enjoyable and easy to read.

I would recommend to all Musical Theatre students out there and graduates too that you will gain so much knowledge and understanding from reading this book.

The writer of this book sure knows her stuff.

Ok I've bought this for my teenage daughter who is mad on music theatre. It's a good first book on the subject with a huge amount of basic knowledge and for that reason I would recommend it. However, I do have some serious reservations when it comes to her potted "overview" of each composers. For example, the endless sycophantic adoration of all things Andrew Lloyd Webber, including his "impressive cellarage of vintage wine" in almost every chapter is curiously juxtaposed with an extraordinary dismissal of Stephen Sondheim in just seven lines (even Richard Stilgoe merits more space apparently). To merely write off Stephen Sondheim as "an acquired taste" betrays a lack of intellectual depth that I find very disappointing.

Missing 10 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
Already at a glance I can see this book is very incomplete.
There is no listing for «Zip Goes a Million» nor «Love from Judy» both musicals had very succesful runs in the West End and on tour in the 1950's. How many more musicals are not listed?
Gerry Atkins.

frightening
This book is very poorly written. There are many claims made by the author which appear entirely made up and the bias toward Webber is quite comical. Read more
