Product Description

Review

"Finding low-sodium brands at the supermarket can be time-consuming. You'll find it easier with the Pocket Guide to Low Sodium Foods." --"Heart-Healthy Living"

Product Description

Specifically aimed at individuals on a sodium-restricted diet, this nutritional counter addresses which supermarket products and fast food items have the lowest sodium contents and simplifies the selection process by limiting its listings to products with low-sodium values. In addition to identifying sodium content, all foods contained in the guide are analyzed by calories, carbohydrates, cholesterol, fat, saturated fat, trans fats, fiber, and sugar levels. Assistance in interpreting dining-out food labeling guidelines, advice on how to read nutritive value abbreviations and symbols, and information on food measurements and equivalents are included along with brief descriptions of each nutrient and its effect on blood pressure.

An excellent resource and shopping guide 7 Dec 2003
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Now in its 2003 edition, Pocket Guide To Low Sodium Foods by Bobbie Mostyn is a no-nonsense, but thoroughly "user friendly" informational pocketbook resource comprising more than 3,000 entries for generic and brand-name foods suited for low-salt diets. Each entry lists the estimated sodium content per serving, and often calories, fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, fiber, and sugars as well. An excellent resource and shopping guide for anyone looking to lower their salt intake, the Pocket Guide To Low Sodium Foods can be easily slipped into any purse or pocket for use when dining out or shopping at the supermarket.

EASY TO USE, BUT... 6 Dec 2007
By Marla1001 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is pretty simple to follow and fairly easy to use in general, but I have never heard of over 90% of the Brand Names for food items listed. I mean never. I do a ton of internet shopping and do my grocery shopping in multiple stores, and yet the vast majority of these "Name Brands" are totally foreign to me. Just for research, I tried looking for some of the brands on the internet, and couldn't find them. How is that going to help me shop for low-sodium foods in my local grocery stores? I don't feel I can use the Generic nutritional info, as there is really no way to know just how realistic those may be, as prepared food recipes can vary quite a bit from brand to brand and store to store.

I do find the listings for popular National chain restaurants and fast food places to be very informative, and have pretty much decided that I can never ever eat at any of those places ever ever again.

I guess I will just have to continue reading the nutritional labels of every single last grocery product I pick up in the supermarket, and resign to the fact that it's unhealthy to eat any entrée at any chain restaurant.
