5.0 out of 5 stars Great yaar.A british asian story without harping on about it, 2 Aug 2004

This review is from: The Pocket Guide to Being an Indian Girl (Paperback)
I couldn't put this book down. I know people say that sll the time about most books but I mean it. Okay so I'm biased and I'm from Dudley but the Dhillons and the Rai bunch all just fit in Dudley. I know loads of people like that. Watch out for the tight jeans and arthritis bit, that killed me. It's a completely comical story with intelligence thrown in suppose then that makes it witty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tells it like it is, 23 July 2004
This review is from: The Pocket Guide to Being an Indian Girl (Paperback)
I simply adored this book. I don't think I've read a book about a British Asian girl who isn't a complete coconut or a complete pendu.
Sushminder is hilarious and takes no prisoners. She is a walking contradiction like most teenagers but something sets her apart. Perhaps its the way in which she talks about her life, heart and mind in sync, or perhaps it's the way in which she doesn't talk down to me. I hate other books that tell me what my 'culture' is about. I already know thank you very much!
The book has loads of stuff I can relate to and I like that. My favourite bit is about the bhangra gig - so true. I also loved the weird characters who crop up in the book. They made me feel that being weird and different is okay.
I've been waiting for a book like this to come along.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent story, 17 Aug 2004

This review is from: The Pocket Guide to Being an Indian Girl (Paperback)
I'm a guy who has read the book and surprisingly I found it to be a unique and inspiring story as it wasn't just a typical asian bandwagon book. It actually had a story and was jam packed with lots of thoughts that resonated with my own. What struck me as most inspiring was Sushi and her Dad. The story wasn't excoticised or made frothy, the author just took on the voice of the teenager and told it straight. That worked for me. I hope to see more REAL books out there like this one and will be waiting for the next one. I'm tired of the 'look at me I'm asian' books. Thank god this one isn't. GO READ IT.
