Product Description

Review

'My old editions of this established book look very worn, as they have travelled far and wide. Two reasons for this are the content and the fact it is pocket size. This edition is slightly bigger, thicker and has a PVC cover. However, the expansion allows for a clearer layout, more durable paper and additional information, and it is still pocket size, an important factor. This book I feel would be an asset to any member both whilst working and playing. It will also be a good complement to many first aid courses we may attend and, for once, it is something which is inexpensive.'(AMI news / June 2007)'The small size of this attractive new series launched by Cicerone will make them very suitable for carrying on the hill. All are well illustrated with colour photos, sketches and map, and have solid plastic covers.First Aid and Wilderness Medicine packs an enormous amount of information into 240 well-laid-out pages covering prevention, dealing with an accident and illnesses. The authors have plenty of practical experience from many wild places, including the Himalaya and Antarctica. I can't offer a medical opinion, but this strikes me as a book I would like to have had with me on my trips into the wild.'(Irish Mountain Log / Summer 2007)

Product Description

Written by renowned experts Jim Duff and Peter Gormly, this guidebook describes basic first aid techniques for those travelling in wilderness areas. Deals with fundamentals such as preparation, prevention, first aid kits and the use of medications and painkillers; and provides details on how to deal with a variety of accidents and illnesses. Venturing into remote areas involves a degree of risk. Minimizing these risks, while feeling confident in your ability to deal with any potential injury or illness, is part of the challenge and satisfaction of wilderness travel. This book is divided into 3 parts: Part 1. THE FUNDAMENTALS - preparation, prevention, first aid kits and the use of medications and painkillers; Part 2. ACCIDENT AND ILLNESS PROCEDURE - how to deal with any accident and illness, including emergency treatment for life-threatening situations; Part 3. PROBLEMS AND THEIR TREATMENT - specific accidents and illnesses. The authors' wilderness experience was gained as mountaineers in Scotland, Norway, the European Alps, New Zealand, the Himalayas and Antarctica. Dr Jim Duff was a member of a mountain rescue team and has more than 30 years' experience of climbing, trekking and teaching wilderness medicine, first aid and leadership in the Himalayas, Australia and East Africa. Dr Peter Gormly has been involved in safety, first aid and health issues in Antarctica for many years.

Essential packing 30 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
Cicerone have just published the tenth edition of (Pocket) First Aid and Wilderness Medicine by mountaineering doctors Jim Duff and Peter Gormly. For those people, such as wildlife film-makers, who work out in the wilds, distant from the nearest hospital, this is surely an essential item to add to the packing list. Despite being small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or slip in a rucksack, the book is packed with information about almost every sort of health-related problem you may encounter in the bush. There are numerous flow charts, enabling you to assess situations and determine the action required - this could not only be life-saving but could also prevent costly mistakes (for example where evacuation is not required). Some of the described bush-treatments are a revalation! There are also useful charts of medications and suggested contents of first aid kits. From snake-bites to altitude sickness, broken bones to frostbite, this is highly recommended for all outdoors enthusiasts. Further information from www.cicerone.co.uk.

Excellent 21 Sep 2010
By steve
Format:Paperback
I served 15 years in the armed forces and on several occasions administered first aid myself. I now teach first aid at work and paediatric first aid and am a scout adult leader. This book is one of the best books on the subject I have seen. it is clear concise to the point but above all it is down to earth easy to read and straight to the point. I certainly know that none of us know everything but even with experience in this area I have learnt new techniques. This book is a must for leaders and anyone involved in outdoor pursuits. Small enough and tough enough with its hardened plastic cover to sit well in any size backpack. However to get full use out of it a first aid course first is recommended as I am sure the author will agree. Best buy I have made in relation to outdoor activity books.

This book was exactly what I was looking for - a clear, detailed, comprehensive and up-to-date first aid book that is also pocket sized. Book contains suggestions for different levels of first aid kits, basics of first aid and a large list of both common and more rare diseases, their symptons and their treatments. Details of which antibiotics are useful when are particularly useful when travelling!

As other people have mentioned, some basic understanding of first aid or medicine is helpful to fully understand some of the diagnoses, and indeed to properly administer some of the treatments. However, this only makes the book applicable to not only those with basic first aid knowledge, but also those with more advanced training (even if it's just to serve as a reminder to their knowledge). In short, it is applicable to all and an excellent buy.
