Excellent 21 May 2008
Format:Vinyl Bound
I have had to bump up the score to a five as the 4 did not do this book justice. This really is an excellent medical textbook. Known this book well and you will know a great deal of the practice of medicine. Easily covers undergraduate medicine. I have GPVTS doctors working for me and usually insist they buy a copy if they don't have something better as they will not have the time to read anything bigger and in most cases this will be enough. This is a very different book to the OHCM which is a reference book. This is a textbook to be read chapter by chapter and understood. If you then want something bigger then I'd recommend Davidson's.

One of my favourites 13 Oct 2008
Format:Vinyl Bound
Pocket Essentials is a great little book to review the night before you start on a rotation. It is small enough that you can easily read over the chapter and then appear on the ward with a good idea of what is going on. It doesn't replace the Oxford Handbook but rather compliments it. The Oxford Handbook is great for key facts, Pocket Essentials on the other hand gives a fundamental overview of what you need to know.

Whilst I am reviewing this from a student nurse perspective, this book is geared towards primarily med students.

Firstly this book is available in a PDA format for the techno bods out there which may be welcome to some as the pocket book has over 1,000 pages.

This book is incredibly detailed and very well laid out in colour coded format.
Each section details a small introduction, pathophysiology of an ailment, clinical features, investigations, management and potential complications that may be linked to this one problem.

In short this book is concise, succinct and gets straight to the point, it also has a handy section at the back to revise for examination questions.

From my perspective it is ideal as a reference whoever uses this and as a Student Nurse this can be utilised to aid medical understanding and ultimately promote better patient care.
