Amazon.co.uk Review

Whether or not Native Americans appreciate late 20th century Hollywood apologising for stealing their land, Disney's intentions seem to be well meaning. Whether or not the subject matter was responsible in part for it being less of a hit than those before and after, Disney's animation and dabbling in CGI gave it a terrific look. Whether or not it was about time someone else won an Oscar, Alan Menken's score is remarkably rich, with only the barest of "Indian" flavouring and a distinct lack of anything "cowboy". "The Virginia Company" is a Yankee pride march that paves the way for "Savages" to thump out the drums of war at a politically incorrect ethic. "Just Around The Riverbend" is the strongest number, eloquently exploring the possibilities of life. There's also a neat habit of splitting material into two parts, making for a song and score separation that works to the material's advantage. "Listen With Your Heart I" and "II" have some very nice native American backing but in measured doses of sweet and dark. In the extended score suite Menken delivers some adventurous orchestral pieces, with "Skirmish" whipping up a memorable cavalry charge. Whether or not you can stomach it, historical Disney is still Disney. --Paul Tonks

Once again Disney took my breath away from me with their motion picture "Pocahontas". I bought it as soon as it was released to video, and was astonished by the incredible combination of history with contemporary - the 17th Century voyage of discovery brought to life with modern-day animation and song; it is for this reason I purchased the soundtrack album. No other production company seems to use so much care in compiling their feature presentations as Disney have on many occasion; "Pocahontas" is one of the greatest animated feature films made by Disney, and this is why I always turn to Disney for my Children's entertainment - the care in ensuring the utmost is put into producing, to result in the highest quality family entertaiment around, and I'm not alone here!

Come on, buy this record - it has all the orignal beautiful music from the movie, plus "Colours of the Wind" sung by the author, Vanessa Williams. As with CDs such as "The Lion King" soundtrack, it includes the wonderful, heartwarming, sombre background music setting a perfect ambient, peaceful mood.

Thouroughly recommended. - Deserving of far more than 5 *s!

If you're already a fan of ALan Menken's score for other Disney films, this is definitely one to add to your collection. The themes for the settlers and the indians are clearly distinguishable, but flow together perfectly in sections were both are needed, even without checking the track names you'll easily recognise which part of the film each piece comes from. However you may feel about the occasionally sappy wording of most Disney lyrics you won't be disappointed by the melodies or the quality of the singing.

The only problem I have with it is the order; the songs with lyrics are put first, with instrumental music that should go in between songs coming in a block at the end. It might be nicer to listen to if the songs and instrumentals were in the order they are in the film, as in some other Disney soundtracks, but that certainly shouldn't discourage anyone from buying it.
