Product Description
This is an intense and exciting story about rural life in Britain just before the First World War. Arthur is the school dunce and is always being picked on by his teacher but away from the classroom his knowledge of nature and the country is remarkable. 5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and appealing, 9 Jul 2008
I read this finding it discarded and as yet unread in offsprings's room.
What a tremendous piece of social histoy in a nutshell.
Class issues and attitudes and aspirations appropriate to time and place are covered extremly well, we hope attitudes long gone but with education divides as they still exsist in 2008 I am not so sure. Dashed hopes and aspirations not just concerning the main character are portrayed well. A Stoical acceptance covering major and death life experiences permeates through the story.
This book is not air fairy, sentimental or patronising it is a good down to earth meaty read. I have read it as a parent. Youngsters may gain an underatanding of why young boys flocked to WW1 recruiting offices to escape the grinding poverty and hopeless badly educated underclass of thir parents.
Nw to get my children to read it!
